Shepard Smith, the Fox News Correspondent who went postal ala Anderson Cooper, was outed by the Washington Blade. Anderson Cooper is also mentioned.
"NATIONAL COMING OUT Day came and went last week without any public declarations from celebrities or other public figures long rumored to be gay, but who simply refuse to acknowledge their sexual orientation."

Shepard Smith went a little nutsy (in a good way) and actually told the truth about conditions on the ground during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Anderson Cooper did the same, but from CNN, it was not so surprising. It was a bit more surprising to hear a Fox correspondent slamming the Federal Government.
I believe that after his outburst, he was given a few days of off-air rest time.

although, i have to say that i'm not a fan of outing. especially a professional trying to make it in any business where the fickle public has a say in your longevity.
it's not for anyone else to determine when, or if, anyone else should come out. it's such a personal choice and hard enough for regular, everyday folks let alone someone in such a visible role as a newscaster/actor, etc.

This article is hardly any better than the stories covered in US Weekly; it's just a bunch of ridiculous gossip and accusations.

No, but it's quite clear Anderson Cooper meant something like an African American reporter wouldn't be able to cover a KKK rally- because their minority status would detract from accurate coverage of the story.
Oh, and the writer's comment about being a gay journalist not costing him a job- he works for a gay newspaper in a liberal city, not a nationwide cable news network- the situations are not as comparable as he would like to think.

The thing about Anderson (and I LOVE me some Andreson) is that it's a bit disingenuous of him. He can't one night say to Pat Robertson (or Buchanan...one of the hateful Pats) 'We pay taxes' in response to the hateful Pat's hateful spiel on why gays shouldn't be allowed to marry and then turn around and say 'It will compromise me as an observer.' Also, not always smart to trot around Barracuda and expect NO ONE to guess. But maybe he's just a supportive straight.
Like when Jeff 'NASCAR' Gordon went to Beige that one night.

I dunno, when you're a public figure so much of you is already out there for everyone to see...is it really anyone's business to decide that you have to be a champion for gay rights?
That's really why the article makes me a bit uncomfortable...but you know, on another level it does seems a little silly to be so scared to answer the question.

The journalist always runs a risk, orangeskittles--I mean he lives in DC, which may be liberal but is by no means one of our safer cities. And his face is on his column, so he's a target for any nut job out there, so he's not totally free from danger.
I agree that his article is gossip and heresay, but as a gay guy in this country, it's very disheartening to realize that there are people who wish to keep their sexuality a secret, but also expect acceptance from the gay community when they want a relationship, sex, support, etc. I am of the mind that if you want to stay in the closet--fine--just don't ask me for a date or to buy your book if you're ashamed and/or afraid to hold my hand in public or let the public know you're a pickle-chugger.
And as a rule, the gay grapevine doesn't NEED to make up stories-we got plenty of true ones to last many lifetimes...
Sorry, I just couldn't stay that serious...
