On the Main Board, they're posting about "Shilled Shows."

Forgive me for being the "old coot" that I am, but could someone kindly explain to me what EXACTLY is a "shilled show"?

"Shilling" is a practice where people are paid by shows to promote the show online (message boards, etc.). They usually post for one day and only about the show. Wicked and Brooklyn have the most shills. People joke about being shills for shows they love. Many times, the shill will come back to the board with different names and reply to their earlier posts (when they were the other posters). It's tricky to pull off, and it usually never works, but it doesn't stop them from trying.

WOW... in my day, shows that were "in trouble" would give random folks off the street a free dinner and two tickets to see the show so they would hopefully say nice things about it to their friends.

And even THAT practice was frowned upon by some Broadway Producers and Critics.

I guess this Super Information Highway Age we live in is changing EVERYTHING.

THANKS for the info, Gov.! :)
