After all, the book devotes considerable space to the rigor of the preparation, but this is all handled in the opening credits in the movie “Lone Survivor.” (I have used Lone Survivor in my classes as a required reading since it came out, and it is now good to have a movie version.) I don’t think I’ll spoil anything about the end of the story (in fact, I personally think it makes it better) when I tell you that, after being rescued, Marcus Luttrell walked off the C-130 he flew in back to his home base, Bagram Air Base.

In the movie, you’re led to believe he’s near death. Lone Survivor Full Movie He WAS in bad shape. He’d been shot, beaten and had grenade shrapnel in him. AND he had a broken nose, wrist and three cracked vertebrae. Oh yeah, and he’d lost thirty seven pounds in less than one week. After he got on the tarmac, they insisted he get on the stretcher and they loaded him into a van for the ride to the hospital. And, in the van, when his commanding officer asked him if there was anything he needed, Marcus said, “Do you think I could get a cheeseburger?”

The movie is faithful to the book in most cases, although you’d swear that they threw in a couple of extra mountain slopes for the Redwing team to roll down (the extras did these stunts themselves, and did not use dummies. One stunt man suffered several broken ribs and other injuries.) Certainly you cringe every time the SEALs begin another series of tumbles down the rocky, wooded slopes.There are some people who are knocking it because Hollywood used some creative license to add that Hollywood flair, but don’t let you stop you from seeing this film. Even if Hollywood did use some liberties, it is still a powerful story that shows the courage of a small group of men

How can the screenplay of a nine hour movie trilogy - or any part of it - adapted from a 300 page novel, a screenplay dubiously stretched out for the purposes of maximizing revenue, qualify as simply great?

Or another way of looking at this, how is it artistically defensible that the three-part Hobbit movie runs as long as the movies made from the Lord of the Rings trilogy?

It's not just based on the novel. It also culls elements from hundreds of pages of appendices as well as The Simarillion.

People whining about Jackson stretching out The Hobbit have either not seen the movies, not read the novel, or neither.

Tazber, I have read the Lord of the Rings trilogy and loved the books and Jackson's films. I have read The Hobbit. I saw the first of Jackson's three three hour films form The Hobbit (and, thank you, The Simarillion, which I have not read - although it seemed to me that the first movie was simply a very long film from the first part of The Hobbit) and did not like it.

So, perhaps I'm being unfair, perhaps I am whining, but it is not because I have not read Tolkien or that I didn't give the movies a chance. But you have me intrigued. Perhaps I judged hastily and the second movie is better than the first.

I didn't mean to whine, my question is an earnest one; why 9 hours of film from The Hobbit. You have provided somewhat of an answer; that it's not just from The Hobbit. I didn't know that before. So thank you.
