Streetcar - the film#0

Watched this morning on one of the HBOs.
Had not seen it since God knows when.
Damn, Vivien Leigh is perfect.
I wonder how she differs from Jessica Tandy.
Did anyone notice the resemblance of the actress who played Eunice to Elaine Stritch?

Jessica Tandy played Blanche as a rather mean dispirited individual--at least in my opinion. You could feel the audience rooting in favor of Stanley, not Blanche. This is what makes STREETCAR and the parts of Blanche and Stanley so interesting. They can be interpreted in so many different ways. Vivien Leigh was much more successful in portraying Blanche's sympathetic and fragile side. With Tandy, you felt that she could and would never break!

Thank you Miriam!
I love Jessica Tandy and your thoughts will help me imagine her as Blanche. :)

Posted: 4/24/05 at 12:13pmI Have and Love this movie!!!!!! Wonderful cast, I think I like Stella(Kim Hunter) the best. When Marlon Brando died there was a poll on what you favorite Brando role was, or what you thought he was best in,ect. anyways, I voted for Streetcar. I just LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

Posted: 4/24/05 at 1:00pmOne of my favorite movies. Gets played at least once a month if not more. I have always wondered if Jessica Tandy was a superior Blanche just because she's Jessica Tandy. Although once again Miriam entrances me and now I can se ehow she would be viewed as a much stronger Blanche. What an amazing film though. It just drips with acting. This and GlenGarry Glen Ross are perfect examples of perfect acting in a movie. Complete and total lessons in the craft can be forged by watching these movies.

The movie is amazing! Kazan, Williams, Brnado, Leigh, Hunter and please let's not forget the often overlooked Karl Malden as "Mitch".

What more needs be said?
I was always startled by the remark made by Brando late in life, when he looked at photos or footage of himself from early in his career.
"I was beautiful then. But I'm much nicer now."

I worked with Kim Hunter once and she had wonderful stories about Streetcar. It's well known that Brando and Leigh didn't like each other.
She said, one time on Broadway, at the point where Brando picks her up and heads toward the bedroom, the lights were supposed to go out but somebody must have been snoozing backstage. She said they reached the bedroom and no lights out, so Brando just kept walking through the closet door and offstage. She wondered what the audience thought they would be doing in the closet.

Posted: 4/24/05 at 9:39pmI watched this one for the first time a few weeks ago and was in awe the entire time. Leigh was a hell of an actress and Brando was pretty damn sexy. I can't wait to see what Richardson and Reilly do for the roles.
