Im going to Temple next year to study theater. Has anyone gone? And what were your impressions?
(Responding from your thread on the Bway Board haha)
Yes that'd be funny if we were scene partners! Are you from Philadelphia?
I just graduated from Temple in May with a theater minor. I absolutely loved my tenure there and had the opportunity to be in two mainstage productions and two student productions. It's very much a "you get what you give" situation. If you're interested in learning about your craft and bettering yourself, I feel like it's well worth it. I grew leaps and bounds as an actor thanks to two very important women at Temple, Nancy Boykin and Lynne Innerst. If you get the chance to have them as instructors, I highly recommend it.
I really feel that you need to do as much work as you can. There is an undergraduate directing course where students put up scenes and can be a great way to get your face out and to build up a good scene repertoire. There are also directing graduate students that present scenes. Where some of my friends fell behind was in getting bogged down by not being cast in mainstages. Essentially, you need to work to improve yourself and not to just say you were in a mainstage production, because God knows one of the mainstage productions I was in wasn't the most rewarding thing for me as an actor.
All in all, there may be some experiences like auditions and instructors that just make you feel horrible and like you wasted your time, but how else would you learn. I wish you both the best of luck and hope you have as great a time as I did.
TThanks for your kind words. The irony is Im a member of SAG and Equity, but have never studied theatre in college. Its definitely a craft than can be improved and honed!
