Posted: 10/3/04 at 11:44amThis is a dvd set of the MGM "Thats Entertainment" movies that they released throughout the years celebrating the studios rich musical contributions. They are a must. And I also believe that for any student of performance, direction, production, or musicals in general; they should be required viewing. They cover talkies, the birth of the movie musical, it shows us the old studio system when the actors were schooled, trained and under exclusive contract. The movies covered include all the Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, Esther Williams, and many others ( only half a cup of coffee here- so my brain is not functioning) They show you how they were made, they show you rehearsals, they show you what studio life was all about. I can't recommend this enough.

Darn, I hoped this thread would be about the Jean Renoir package of THE GOLDEN COACH, FRENCH CAN-CAN and ELENA AND HER MEN. But it's ok..I like THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT also. Are there any extras with the DVDs?

Posted: 10/4/04 at 12:32pmWhat made these films so special was the chance to see these wonderful stars and musical numbers on the big screen. The original was released before the cable and VCR boom so it was a rare chance for people to see, perhaps for the first time what all the fuss over Judy Garland, Astaire and Rogers or Gene Kelley was all about. I know I saw it in the theatre at least 3 times. It may not be a big deal now that all the old films are available for sale or rental and you can see them anytime you wish, but back then it was a very rare treat.
