Totally ignored by the gay [and straight] press, Charles Nelson Reilly did a one-man show at NYC's Irish Rep, and across the country, around the same time as Elaine Stritch.
Believe it or not, Reilly's show was better than Stritch's in that he was not afraid to go dark on subjects like homophobia and his parents' tempestuous relationship and to shine his pride on being an actor in the theatre. The live show ran almost 3 hours and went by before your blank started to go numb.
This Friday, a film of the show opens in NYC at Cinema Village. On Friday, its filmmakers will also appear on the Frank DeCaro show on SIRIUS Radio.
Check it out.

They filmed it?!
Very cool! Maybe it will wind its way to a DVD release. It would be a fitting tribute.

I have been waiting for the news that this would be released on DVD, as I am also not in NY. When reading the reviews about the show throughout the internet, I was upset to realize that the show was actually in SF on stage years back and I didn't even know it.
The CNR site is great, and I thoroughly enjoyed the clips I saw of the film on YouTube. There's actually quite a lot CNR on YouTube...I finally got to watch his XFiles performance because of the site!

Thanks for sharing that, justme2. It's playing out here in L.A. through tomorrow... and I can't go see it.
I hope it comes out on DVD!
