Oh for the love of GOD how much more can we be expected to enduuuuuuuuuuuure this month?
The Times: "U2 will play a significant part in Apple's event, which will be held at a performing arts center in Cupertino, Calif., the company's home base, according to three people briefed on its plans."
Maybe they'll unveil an app where you get points for stabbing a cartoon Julie Taymor in the back over and over and over again?

Maybe they could get that Bank of America guy to help them with the lyrics of "One", only this time about the iPhone!
These dudes were WAY ahead of their time

This was a band I saw in tiny clubs, then bigger clubs, then theaters, then small arenas, then big arenas.
And now I HATE them. Just the very sight of Hedge and Boner. Yecccccch.
Can this really be what Apple thinks will appeal to the kidz of today?

U2 and Madonna are the only two artists I can think of to be unqualified mainstream and critical successes all the way from the early Eighties to today without ever really clocking out and having a comeback.
I say Unqualified because several others have moved from one area of work to another- Danny Elfman's rock stardom around that period transferred to film scores instead, and Randy Newman became a major movie composer (some say his true calling) just as soon as his pop stardom was primed to end.

Posted: 9/8/14 at 10:33pmU2 takes FOREVER between albums and they still sound unfinished when they release them and that last one was such an unmitigated piece of dreck. Then Spider-Man. They're through. The world is not eagerly awaiting tr what U2 has to say because they ran out of things to say last time.

Posted: 9/8/14 at 11:46pmApple doesn't really care about the kids of today. They care about the 30, 40, and 50 somethings who are actually shelling out the big bucks for their products. It doesn't matter what the trust fund babies think, mommy and daddy are the ones making all the purchasing decisions.

Posted: 9/8/14 at 11:59pmMaybe Apple cares about the 30 and 40 demo, because they spend the money. I just don't think all that many people in their 30s care about rock or U2.

Posted: 9/9/14 at 2:08amOn what album did you give up on U2? Think it was October for me, thought they were going to be great at that stage. I guess if you are going to sell out, do it in a big way eh

The last great album U2 put out was Achtung Baby.
Zooropa and Pop were decent.
The subsequent 3 were blah.
Their upcoming album may the first one I skip.

Posted: 9/9/14 at 9:15amThat last one. What was it called? "No Songs On the Horizon"? Zheeshush.

I thought "All That You Can't Leave Behind" was a great album and "Vertigo" was pretty good as well.
Agreed though as a big U2 fan..."No Line on the Horizon" was a disappointment.

And first.
They even managed to make a Phil Spector Christmas tune sound desperate.

Wait. iTunes is telling me that the album (Songs of Innocence) is already in my library - but it's not. I have no idea what an iCloud is. Should I?

I found what I was looking for. Playing now. I like it - more pleasant than earth-shattering, though. Don't skip it tazber, especially as it's free!
I'll stop talking to myself now.

Oh yay, Lykke Li features on the last track "The Troubles". Love her.
Okay, I'm really stopping now.

I think you mean the Pretenders offering, Namo. Annie Lennox (or Eurythmics? It's negligible) offered a rather cheerful, albeit cheesy "Winter Wonderland" that sounds like Annie singing "I'll Cover You" at karaoke night.
Chryssie Hynde, however, turned in a solo-guitar performance of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" that she later admits was essentially a suicide note, a cry for help disguised as a Christmas song. Judy may have originally sung that it MAY be her last Christmas, but Chryssie sounds like she's hoping for it.

I loooooooove The Pretenders one. I listen to it every Holiday Season (opening salvo, War On Xmas '14).
I listened to the whole U2 album, except for Iris, which I could only listen to half. I tried again and had to turn it off at the exact same place. If you slapped Weird Al's name on it, it would be the pitch perfect parody of a full U2 album. Fortunately, it is not magically in my iTunes library so I don't have delete it.

In case you change your mind (you don't have to admit it to us!), if you click on "Purchased" it should be there to download into your library. At least that's what I did.
Song 11, "The Troubles" is my favorite. You're right, though. Overall, disappointing.

Posted: 9/10/14 at 10:22pmWho else but U2 would release a song called "The Miracle of Joey Ramone" and make it sound like The Lumineers? So fresh and up-to-the-2-years ago! And *then* they do a song inspired by the first time they saw The Clash in concert (I remember how thrilling it was the first time I saw The Clash in concert) and make it sound like Coldplay. Oh, U2, what are we going to do with you?

Rolling Stone gives the album five stars. Make of that what you will.
