Posted: 9/2/09 at 11:49amAnyone who would think it's ok to go up to someone else's 2 year-old and SLAP them because they're crying needs to be behind bars. That is a dangerous man. Slapping your own kids is bad enough, but there is personal emotional investment that fuels the action. Slapping a stranger's kid that you can walk away from is frightening.

You should never slap someone else's child but....c'mon.
"Paige Mathews, 2, was not injured, but did suffer some redness in the face. She was treated at the scene and released"
She was TREATED AT THE SCENE???? I wish someone would have treated my ass everytime I talked back to my Father when I was a kid and he pulled that damn belt out. Taught me not to scream in public and talk back. I'm only 30 but I truly believe that parents not putting the fear of God into their kids anymore for fear of getting arrested is turning out some real weak ass kids in this society.
And no, I don't believe hitting kids is right.

And at Walmart. I mean, it's not like it was at a private function where children shouldn't have been brought. Even then, it's inexcusable.
I LOVE his pic though. It's like he's posing for the camera.
Stockard! Opening game is this Saturday!!! We got free jerseys and I wanted to know if you want me to pick you up one? There are still a lot left.

Posted: 9/2/09 at 11:57amI'm sure she was treated at the scene because WalMart is conscious of their potential liability if the man had hurt the child and they didn't offer treatment. Also the mother was probably understandably frightened of what exactly the angry man slapping her kid had done.

The guy is outrageous and wrong and should be slapped with a seriously hefty fine.
Can't say I don't understand the instinct, though.

This is a crime and a serious lack of judgment.
He should have slapped the mother repeatedly for ignoring her crying child.

I have to put my hands in my pockets sometimes to keep from doing the same thing.
See, I can control my homicidal tendancies...

If I was the mom I'd have, probably, slapped him back. How absolutely dare he touch that child. How can he be so sure that the child needed to be disciplined? A child can be crying for dozes of reasons and not all of them mean the child is being bad. I've mentioned my handicapped sister many times on the board. She used to SCREAM and cry when she was little. Mostly because she couldn't communicate what she needed and would get frustrated. Perhaps the child is a disibility and gets frustrated. Or perhaps the child was hurt. It's easy to jump right to "that kid is being bad" just because the noise is annoying you.
I'm sure she was treated at the scene because WalMart is conscious of their potential liability if the man had hurt the child and they didn't offer treatment
I'm sure that's it. A lot of companies learned quickly after the McDonalds hot coffee incident.
Also, we don't know how hard he hit her. If he slapped her hard enough to make her head snap she could have had a neck injury of some sort. Better to have her checked out.

Eris, if the child had special needs or something else was wrong, the mother should have been attending to it.
I'm not saying what this guy did was right. It wasn't. But he didn't "just walk up and slap the kid" out of nowhere. He warned the mother several times. (No, that's not an excuse.) But the mother WAS alerted that her toddler was annoying people. She did nothing about it.
That's why the mother should have been slapped repeatedly. She could have taken her child out of the store. She also could have moved away from this crazy guy who was threatening to slap her kid.
She did nothing instead. As so many moms with screaming babies do. Parents never used to do that when I was growing up. If a child started to cry or scream, their mother or father would take the child away from the public event and tend to the issues, whether they were serious or not. They would stop what they were doing, pull the kid aside, and address the situation.
Why don't they do that anymore?

Posted: 9/2/09 at 1:01pmBottom line: Wal Mart is a slobber-site for knuckle-dragging a**holes of all stripes and no one with any sense of class should go there.

Posted: 9/2/09 at 1:10pm1000% in agreement with you best12bars! According to my mom and dad, I threw a tantrum at a K-Mart when I was little cos I wanted a Miss Piggy doll. Mom says since I threw myself to the floor screaming, she literally dragged me by my coat to the car.

I think if a parent lets their child behave disruptively and does nothing about it, it's no different than willfully setting off a siren or playing excruciatingly loud music in a public area. They're just knowingly letting it blast away.
They should be ticketed for disturbing the peace. That would change today's "parenting skills" in a hurry.
