What about "The New World"?

Did is just not make the release time to qualify for the Globes and Oscars? Or has it been moved to next year? There was a lot of buzz surrounding it, and now I've heard nothing.
Has it even been released? Someone please fill me in. It looks like a great film.

Posted: 1/5/06 at 4:29pmNo, it has still been eligible for the Oscars, Globes, guild awards, etc. Its buzz is almost strictly due to its director, Terrence Malick (of THE THIN RED LINE fame), but has all disappeared. It has received mixed-to-positive reviews and hasn't been doing all that well in its very limited release. I'm surprised New Line doesn't have a more aggressive marketing campaign, because the film cost three times the budget of BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN and was made to be an Oscar contender. Yet, nothing.

THE THIN RED LINE was such a bore-fest. God, that movie just never ended. I couldn't believe that the same man who made BADLANDS and DAYS OF HEAVEN-two of my favorite films-could make such crap.
Has Malick lost his touch? Did he ever have it to begin with? Sets a mind to wonder.

Posted: 1/5/06 at 4:39pmI think the reviews for the movie (which yes, is already out, in LA at least) haven't been too bad -its metacritic rating is 70, but it just hasn't garnered much attention other than for the lead girl who plays Pocahontas.

Posted: 1/5/06 at 4:43pmI didn't care for this movie. Beautifully shot, but cold and EXTREMELY slow. Usually I wouldn't mind that, but I have my limits. Q'Orianka Kilcher, however, is wonderful as Pocahantas (whose name, unless I'm mistaking, is never said in the film).

Posted: 1/5/06 at 4:50pmI'm still puzzled as why it's only playing in three theatres in LA only. You'd think New Line would want this $30 million Oscar-bait to be seen by more people. It's not doing all that well, either ($10,288 per-theatre average during its opening weekend on Christmas, though it has been going up steadily since). It seems to have lost whatever momentum it once had.

It is way too long. It swung back and forth from being fascinating to dull. The second hour apparently was the more interesting as I didn't look at my watch that whole time.
It's a beautifully shot film.
I did love the opening 20 minutes or so. I found myself very caught up in what it must've been like for the indians to see the ships coming into the harbor for the first time. Seeing a ship of any kind for the first time. And seeing the oddly dressed people (to them) who got out.
And on a shallow note, Colin Farrell and Christian Bale were pretty hot. Love the long scraggly hair/beard look.

Posted: 1/6/06 at 4:30pmWasn't Christian Bale the voice of Thomas in Disney's POCAHONTAS? What character does he play in this version? As for THE THIN RED LINE, that was the first and only time (so far) that I walked out of a movie.
