Munk, I am SO glad that you ask Evelyn's opinion, even though I started the thread!!!!
I think ANYTHING could happen. Delphy getting a surprise nom--you bet.
Ha ha, no JRB notat all! I've posted a few things here and on the GG thread and no one usually responds but Evelyn. I posted a huge Foxx rant inthe GG thread and I thought I would be crucified. So far, itdoesn't look like anyone has read it. Ijust didn't think you were interested in responding. I would actually go out and purchase BEFORE SUNSET just for Delpy's performance.
I've read your "Foxx rant" and all of your other posts, but will have to respond after 6:00!

I don't think THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA will be nominated for anything, except MAYBE Best Original Song for "Learn To Be Lonely." The film was very good, but it wasn't GREAT. It just wasn't fantastic enough for any Oscar noms. I know it's disappointing, because I loved it, but it's realistic.
And if Jamie Foxx doesn't win the Oscar for RAY, then I KNOW that the apocalypse is nigh!
Unfortunately, I don't think you have to worry - Foxx will win the Oscar, although personally I wouldn't vote for him for various reasons, one being that DiCaprio, Cheadle, Depp, and Giamatti give superior performances that go beyond imitation.
I'm probably most partial to the (largely unoriginal, as jrb noted) score for The Aviator just because the music drew me into the represented periods so well. The authenticity of The Aviator is, IMO, its best card. But I do like "Dancing with the Bear" from Finding Neverland's score. The rest of it reminds me of the film too much. LOL. Very saccharine. And I neither have children nor have I been a child for some years, so I don't feel especially touched by a score that (at times) sounds like a baroque interpretation of nursery rhymes. This is strictly a matter of personal taste.
Phantom of the Opera is still a strong contender for Art Direction and Costume Design nominations.
Frida beat The Hours for Original Score.
Unfortunately, I've only seen parts of Before Sunset so I can't give much of a response to the question about Julie Delpy. I thought she was fun in "An American Werewolf in Paris," which I'm sure hardly sets a standard for comparison to the work she's doing now.
Who knows what the Academy is thinking? The Golden Globes weren't predictable, and yet there were no discernible boos or hisses when non-SAG nominees Clive Owen and Natalie Portman won in their respective categories. I'd bet that the SAG nominations reflect the sentiments of a small committee within SAG rather than the opinion of the much, much larger guild. If that's true, then Natalie could easily take Cloris Leachman's place at the Oscars. Thomas Haden Church lacks pedigree - but they may want to reward him for being an "overnight success story" in much the same way that they will probably reward Foxx in lead actor, granted that they aren't too offended by his Golden Globes speech. Wouldn't it be hysterical if Peter Sarsgaard made it into the final five for Kinsey and won?
Well, let's clear up the Oscars vs SAG numbers
Nominating - only the 1298 actors in the Academy nominate the actors for the Oscars. A committee of SAG actors nominate the SAG Awards
Awarding - the entire Academy votes on the actors. This group is 5803. The entire SAG votes for the SAG awards--this group is 120,000.
So, while the SAGs can give clue and/or momentum to Oscar nominees and winners, the numbers are so drastically different that you can't be sure how things will go down.

Based on the trailer (haven't seen the actual movie yet), don't you assume POTO will get nominations for production design and costumes?
Best actor will look like this.
Jamie Foxx-Ray
Don Cheadle-Hotel Rawanda
Liam Neason(sp)-Kinsey
Johnny Depp-Finding Neverland
Leonardo Dicaprio-The Aviator
Who Will Win-Foxx for his over rated Ray Charles impression. Lets just hope he gives a classier speech and doesn't come off so cocky
Who Should Win-Johnny Depp for Finding Neverland. One of his most mature and understated performances to date. There is something to be said for this role and the modern day Olivier deserves the award he has been denied for years.
Who Was Overlooked-Paul Giamanti and Jim Carrey. Carrey keeps getting screwed by the academy for his work in Ace Ventura and Dumb and Dumber. It will take him years to be nominated and longer to win. Basically he will have to repay his dues, ala Robin Williams, although I find Carrey to be a stronger actor.
Giamanti keeps putting out consistant work and deserves to be nominated for Sideways after being tottaly over looked in American Splendor.
Oh, and that kid from Finding Neverland? (too lazy to look up his name...Freddy something?) Best child (male) performance since Christian Bale.
I disagree, Carl. Unfortunately Liam Neeson will probably be the one left out, and Paul Giamatti will definitely be nominated. Still, Jamie Foxx will unfortunately win, like you said. I do agree with you on Depp, though.
Best Picture
Million Dollar Baby
Sideways - Overrated
The Aviator
POTO - Wishful thinking
Hotel Rawanda or Neverland

I loved Sideways. But I do think Million Dollar Baby is the best. Aviator does not have the actors branch out here terribly excited. And Phantom is a joke among all of us.
Here are my predictions. Basically, I'm going to edit the original poster's predix, and put in my own.
Best Picture
The Aviator
Finding Neverland
The Incredibles (If "Beauty and the Beast" can do it, then why not?)
Million Dollar Baby
Sideways
Best Director
Alexander Payne - Sideways
Michel Gondry - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (I hope so)
Martin Scorsese - Aviator, The
Marc Forster - Finding Neverland (:shudder:)
Clint Eastwood - Million Dollar Baby
Best Actor
Leonardo DiCaprio - Aviator, The
Johnny Depp - Finding Neverland; I hate to say it, but he might get a nod. If he does, it proves that the Academy doesn't watch the eligible films. If they did, either Javier Bardem, Jeff Bridges, Kevin Bacon, Gael Garcia Bernal, or MANY others would have this spot.
Jamie Foxx - Ray
Paul Giamatti - Sideways
Don Cheadle - Hotel Rwanda
Best Actress
Annette Bening - Being Julia
Uma Thurman - Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (I'm crossing my fingers for her. She deserves it over Sandino Moreno.)
Hilary Swank - Million Dollar Baby
Imelda Staunton - Vera Drake
Kate Winslet - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Best Supporting Actor
Jamie Foxx - Collateral; I don't believe he'll get a second nod. Especially considering that this is NOT a supporting role, despite popular belief. If not him, then hopefully: Topher Grace, Freddie Highmore, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Wahlberg, Peter O'Toole, or Liev Schreiber.
Morgan Freeman - Million Dollar Baby
Thomas Haden Church - Sideways
Clive Owen - Closer
David Carradine - Kill Bill vol 2
Best Supporting Actress
Cate Blanchett - Aviator, The
Laura Linney - Kinsey
Natalie Portman - Closer
Virginia Madsen - Sideways
Meryl Streep - The Manchurian Candidate (Lord knows the AMPAS love her. And she was terrific in this film. Ya never know.)
Best Screenplay - Adapted
Alexander Payne/Jim Taylor - Sideways
David Magee - Finding Neverland
Patrick Marber - Closer
Paul Haggis - Million Dollar Baby
Tina Fey - Mean Girls (It it's good enough for a WGA nod, which it is, it certainly deserves an Oscar nod.)
Best Screenplay - Original
Bill Condon - Kinsey
Brad Bird - Incredibles, The
Charlie Kaufman - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Keir Pierson/Terry George - Hotel Rwanda
John Logan - Aviator, The
Best Animated Feature
Incredibles, The
The Polar Express
Shrek 2
Best Foreign Language Film
Chorus, The (France)
Five Obstructions, The (Denmark)
House of Flying Daggers (China)
Keys To the House, The (Italy)
Sea Inside, The (Spain)
Best Documentary Feature
Born into Brothels: Calcutta's Red Light Kids

Super Size Me
Tell Them Who You Are
In the Realms of the Unreal
The Oscars are ridiculous. You're correct in claiming that many members of the Academy do not watch the eligible films. They admit to this! (see last year's Chicago Suntimes interview with Meryl Streep for evidence) I wonder why we care so much?
You hit the nail on the head. It's sad that the Oscars are the most prolific film awards in the world, when they suck more and more each year.
They're not as bad as the Tony's yet, thankfully.
Broadway86: I disagree with Uma Thurman being nominated over Moreno from MARIA FULL OF GRACE - Uma Thurman's performance was entertaining but provided no breathtaking acting from anyone. However, I WOULD like to see the brilliant Julie Delpy nominated over Moren for BEFORE SUNSET, and I'm also pulling for them to get a screenplay nod.
I also really hope that RAY will not be nominated for best picture - ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, KINSEY, and FARENHEIT 9/11 all deserve it more than RAY, any maybe even FINDING NEVERLAND.
Oh, God. If "Ray" gets nominated over the films that you mentioned, I'll... But you're right. The films that you mentioned do deserve more notice than that so-so biopic.
But enough of that. More about Uma Thurman... I actually thought her performance was, using your words, breathaking. It's not the kind of role you would expect someone to put so much emotion and subtle depth into. Take, for example, the final half-hour of the film w/ Bill. That is class-act acting if I've ever seen it (not only from Thurman, but from Carradine). She took a role that, if not played correctly, could have been an enigma (which, in the first film, was intentional). Watching Thurman, I knew more about this woman then I would have gotten, had I read the script.
However, I do agree with you about Julie Delpy. She deserves a nomination, and so does the film. Although there were no "Oscary" (er, showy) scenes in that film, Delpy gave an intelligent, charming, and disarmingly sexy performance. Talk about disappearing into a role...
I don't think that Uma Thurman should be nominated. It doesn't even compare to Maria Full of Grace... I just hope Moreno does, becuase she wasn't for the Golden Globes. I thought that Uma was kind of random.
I just hope that Cate Blanchett wins ....
Oscar nominations out tomorrow!
RENThead, enLIGHist, Ozalot, Grobanite, Ringer, Pickwick LW, Wicked, Lost, American Dreams, West Wing
Lea S. Hugh J. Adam P. Idina M. Matt M. Taye D.
So, with the exception of the shorts, there are 97 slots for nominations--post your predictions and let's see who gets the highest number! :)
I got 61 out of 97
The tech categories, Foreign Film, and Doc were all full of surprises.
The Original Score category just seems SOOOO wrong!
But of the top 8 categories, I got 33 out of 40. Vera Drake and Ray made such surprises for me!
No need to show off, you know.
oh no--I was actually embarrassed to admit those scores.
I did get both actress categories perfect!! :P
Jamie Foxx deserves both his nods.
