"He opens a giant can of fruit cocktail and pours it in. He opens a can of some Asian vegetable—water chestnuts, maybe—and pours that in, too. 'This is the China people and queers!!!' he screams and takes his sledgehammer to the thing with a fury that is no fun at all."
Wow.

As soon as I read fruit cocktail, I knew where it was going. Well, at least about the queers. I'm a little confused as to the connection between fruit and China. Or China and queers.
You'd think that the liberal media would be all over this, too.
And you'd think the vicious violent left would be trying to lock him up, because the left is the side of intolerance, you know.

Unbelievable, no? I always thought he just retired.
I was never a fan, but its hard to believe that in the mid-eighties this man ranked just behind Robin Williams and Bill Cosby as one of the most popular stand up comics in the country.

Posted: 7/2/10 at 1:45pmI was very into the stand-up craze of the 80's, and actually did catch his 'act' back then. Not my cup of tea at all, but there was NOTHING like this being thrown out there.

I don't believe I've ever seen a straight man put his hands on his hips so often.

Oh, he was always this much of an a-hole. By the very early pre-world-wide-web '90s there were stories that his stage show (away from TV cameras) contained vicious diatribes against "faggots with AIDS" among other horrors. I recall a gay newspaper getting in touch with his people to dispell the rumors and said publicist chirping, "Gallagher hates gay guys for bringing AIDS to the world his children are growing up in."

Posted: 7/2/10 at 6:40pmI can honestly say I do not know a single person who thinks that Gallagher is or was ever funny. And I know people who think Larry the Cable Guy, Carrot Top, Dane Cook, Rich Vos and this-millennium Jackie Mason are funny.

I don't know who Lindy West is, but I really liked that article. She's a good writer.

What a vile and disgusting individual. His audiences are witnessing the crash and burn of a bitter hack.

Before I read all this stuff about him, I was going to answer the question posed in the title of this thread with a line that Thornton Wilder wrote for the character Sabina in "The Skin of Our Teeth":
Don't ask about the ice cream on your plate, just enjoy...

Posted: 7/3/10 at 4:09pmHe's playing Jonathan's in Ogunquit tonight in what is being billed as a "non-smash" night of Mark Twainian satirical humor. Playhouse queens: get over there! The place he's playing usually hosts mannish melancholy female follies of a certain age.

He did the same exact thing when I saw it.

When standup became big in the 80's I was more into it than anyone I knew but I never saw the appeal of this man. My friends all watched his act on TV and creamed when a new video came out of his stuff and I honestly don't think I ever laughed. There was just something about him that was just so eye rollingly stupid to me.
And I totally get the connection to gays & asians. The only people who ever come on to me are asians so it makes total sense.

He must have mashed his own head under that sledge-o-matic. What a hateful freak.
EDIT: Hey, maybe he can go on tour with Victoria Jackson!

Posted: 2/9/11 at 12:29pmI subscribe to his podcast and listened to it, in shock at just how deluded and self-victimized he is. And then he can't handle an argument and walks out of the interview. you guys gotta listen to how warped he is on this interview.

Posted: 2/9/11 at 1:52pmI remember having breakfast at the restaurant in the Sands casino in Vegas around 1992 or 1993. I was reading a newspaper headline about how Gallagher had just been booed off the stage at the Sands by a very angry audience. I looked up and noticed he was two tables away from me. He was visibly pissed. I think it was the only time Gallagher ever made me laugh.
