I know the election JUST took place. But I can't remember a time where there was such a level of pride and display of support (people wearing t-shirts, buttons, etc) for a president or president-elect.

Is it because we just went through 8 years of "darkness" and any light gives everyone a sense of pride towards the incoming president - or is this something completely different?

Everywhere I went yesterday there were street vendors selling buttons and stickers and the like. I asked my friend if she could imagine the same being done for Bush. I thought it was amazing.

Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!

To be fair, there was also a huge tide of support and energy when Reagan was first elected. Many felt the same way about the Carter term as we do about Bush - and they celebrated the stabilization of their 'world'.

Of course, it was exactly that wave of feeling that drove me out of DC for good re: When was the last time there was nationalistic pride for our president (elect)?

And, while there IS quite a bit of celebrating going on, there is also MUCH wringing of hands occurring in certain segments of the population. Don't forget you're viewing things from that elitist vantage point of Manhattan re: When was the last time there was nationalistic pride for our president (elect)?

I wsan't raising the issue specific or in praise of Obama. My initial post was to open up a dialogue about the last time there was this "pride" in our president and so overtly displayed. I really don't think or remember the same for Reagan thought. Yes some people were thankful that Carter's term was over, but I think (personally) what were seeing now is not just the "anti-bush" relief, but also a genuine excitement over the candidate himself. And so I was wondering when, in the past, the same existed this early (just after election)

There was a massive rush of excitement when Clinton was elected. I remember the shops along Halsted selling posters and postcards of the Clintons or Bill & Al.

And while he was a loathsome failure, some people perversely celebrated Bush's election.

Definitely not the 2nd term. Not unless you count the throwing of vegetables at his limo during the inauguration motorcade as "celebrating" re: When was the last time there was nationalistic pride for our president (elect)?

I knew a few conservatives who were happier the second time around: He'd avenged his daddy and "Proven" that he was right about everything. Or so they said.
