TCM is saluting 1939 this month, so there should be a bevy of true classics over the next few weeks.
"Oil can."
"Oil can what?"

Yea, it's a bit early in the year for my tastes, but whatevs, I'll watch...and quote/sing along.
ETA: Don't feel too bad Reg, I just now got it, seeing it written out.

I always LOVED "Oil can what?"
But my grandfather had that old Vaudeville sense of humor. I grew up with it, and I "got it" back when I was five.
You know? This is a pretty good movie!

I'm kinda digging "you clinking, clanking, clattering collection of collagenous junk!"
Such alteration and well played choice of words.

I still hate that "witches" is spelled incorrectly on the sign in the Haunted Forest.
It should be "witch's," possessive!
Ugh!

Maggie is unstoppable. Unbeatable. And unparalleled in the history of motion pictures.
Dang!

I have a funny feeling I'm about to cry.
Is there any movie more magical or lovely than this?

Maggie is amazing. And you have to stop and remember that she's pretty much inventing our modern notion of a witch.
She's absolutely savage. Where, in a career of school marm's and maids, did THAT come from?

And to think, Reg, she played Madame Armfeldt in the road company of Night Music.

Yes, I have a wonderful print of a photo I bought in some long-gone theater bookstore of Glynis Johns, Hermione Gingold, Jean Simmons, and Margaret Hamilton.
I need to dig it out and frame it one of these days.

That must be awesome.
I just enjoy the picture of her in costume with the caption about Sondheim thinking "That woman can't have had a liaison ever" (or something, I forget the exact quote)

They showed the special from '89 that Angela Lansbury hosted before the movie. No matter how many times I see it I still laugh when we see a late in life Margaret Hamilton telling the story about her agent calling to let her know they were interested in her for a role in the movie.
And he said, "well, the Witch". And I said "The Witch?!?" And he said, then he said the final thing "Yes, what else?"
