You New Yorkers are Crazy!

You can hardly call macaroni and cheese comfort food when it costs $55 a plate. (A small plate at that.)

An unsuspecting diner made the mistake last week of ordering a nightly special at the Waverly Inn, Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter's new high-end restaurant on Bank St. in the West Village.

The special was the homey mac and cheese - albeit topped with delicate shavings of white truffle.

The bill: The salad? $10. The pot pie? $18. "Pasta with Truffles" $55.

Amazing. And here in Chicago, people would be outraged by an $18 Pot Pie.

I had a Lobster pot pie in San Francisco for $11.00. Just sayin'.

Did the customer not know it was a "high-end" restaurant? I thought everyone knew truffles were expensive.

I get nervous when there are no prices listed and the presence of Truffles would have alerted me to ask "How Much??" I like how the reporter ordered it and the waiter asked "The Macaroni and cheese WITH TRUFFLES FOR $55??"

The Mac and Cheese with Truffles was Dave's winning recipe from last season of Top Chef I think.

Obviously, the unsuspecting diner is unfamiliar with truffles.

For the shavings of a really excellent white truffle, $55 is a ridiculous bargain.


One could pay MUCH more.

I WOULD love to be in Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney's shoes for sure-- except for that whole "Poor Little Rich Girl" interlude and that tacky Cole Porter reference....
