Hello fellow BWW-ers :) I am thinking of auditioning for a local production of RENT and had a question. The listing says to prepare 2 contrasting selections, 32 bars each, in the style of the show. Would it be okay to sing something from RENT itself or should I steer clear? Thanks in advance for any thoughts! :)

I personally always steer clear from singing a song from the show I'm auditioning for. As I recall though, when RENT was casting it's national tour they asked to sing contempory rock songs NOT from the show. Even though that probably won't help you with a local production, that's just a bit of information relating to your situation. :]

Thanks! :) I also tend to think it's best not to sing a song from the show I'm auditioning for, but I remembered one audition where a girl before me did then ended up getting cast in a lead role, so I guess it's sort of luck of the draw as far as local productions go. In any case, thanks for the opinion :) I'll have to do some digging at the library for songbooks and such...all the sheet music I have is musical theater not pop/rock lol oy!
