would a repudiation of the don't ask, don't tell policy have saved this iraqi's life?

Posted: 12/20/04 at 11:59amand even though no one made a stink over Lynndie England's having sex with another soldier, the religious right will use this to support the ban on gays, when in reality it is the ban that caused this. It caused the blackmail attempt. It caused the American soldier to be afraid of dealing with his sexuality properly. And, it's all hypocrisy this ban.

Posted: 12/20/04 at 12:41pmActually, that article doesn't give enough details to understand his motive for shooting the teen. He changed his story twice. It sounds more like the guy was messed up in general to begin with than anything else. With all the gays in the military (and probably in Iraq), I'm sure they aren't all murdering their sex partners (shooting them ELEVEN times?). I'm not sure lifting the "don't ask don't tell" would have made any difference.

No---there is LOTS of gay sex in the military that doesn't end in murder.
What's the age of consent in Iraq, papa? Texas and NY are 17. Louisiana and New Jersey is 16. I agree that the religious right will ignore that and pursue some statutory rape/pedophilia angle, but it didn't even occur to me to be an issue.
Besides the fact that a 17yo soldier is indeed a man with what he has to see.

Yeah I agree!! That stupid "don't ask, don't tell" policy. Let's never let another Democrat in the White House. They just mess everything up. Vote against Hillary in 2008. Since her husband signed it, you know she won't repeal it.

does that soldier comment also apply to the 10 year old gun toting "soldiers" pressed into service in some african nations? man you're gonna be so popular withy nambla.
just for your edification, the age of consent in iraq is 18. well it is for male female sexual relations. i don't know that they have laws with regard to male male sexual relations. although all of their neighbors hold it as illegal.

First off, do not associate nambla with gays in general, no more than we associate all pedophiles (the majority of whom identify themselves as straight) with heterosexuals.
Secondly, this murdering soldier more than likely consider himself to be straight and killed the young man becaue he felt guilty or something. THis is hardly a case for banning gays from the military, no more than the rape and murder of female civilians which is quite common is a valid argument for banning heterosexuals from military service..

ma, i didn't associate nambla with gays, just with jrb's assertion that the title "soldier" implied that a person was a man, unless of course you're suggeesting that all soldiers are gay...
besides, my initial post was questioning the idea of whether fear of having to be dealt with under the dadt policy led to this soldier being more willing to commit murder rather than face his own sexuality.

Valid questions. I too disagree with the assertion that the mere fact someone is a soldier makes him a man. Child soldiers are a frequent problem throughout the world.
Also, you were not the one who first brought up the topic of this being used to promote the agenda of banning gays from the military. But I don't think a repudiation of the don't ask don't tell policy is the answer in this case, although it should be repealed.

I just KNEW you were going to go there, papa. You know gd well I did not mean for my comment to extend to kids. I was speaking of those within the varying age of consent laws of our own country (16+).
What the f are you trying to get at with such bs?
And, my comment was in line with the thought that if men are old enough to fight a war, they should have the right to vote. I merely extended the notion to sex. But, I don't think a 10yo should be holding a gun much less anything else.
