...and reveals very little, to Diane Sawyer, other than an elitist slant on her "freedom" as encouraged, passive aggressively, by her Daddy. Her Daddy's girl arrogance strikes me as beyond belief. Refusing to answer "hypotheticals" while touting a tell-all book about her great, bold independent stand as the world's most over-protected and inexpressive (to the point of mute) lesbian.

Has it ever occurred to her that many gay and lesbians in this society don't have the luxery of mere "disagreement" with rich profile-aware parents on these issues? That many among the very core base who vote for her parents don't hestitate to throw their own children in the street when told they're gay?

Because her parents pandered -- pretendeing to be tolerant while really treating Mary's identity as something more like a handicap -- she can now tell America (to get them to buy her book) that George Bush is "a good man" despite policies and a personal mindset that would deprive others of the very "lifestyle"she can pull off, secret service always in tow?

Where's any compassion for other gays and lesbians who don't have her protection?

What an odious set of excuses. She's as full of hubris (and s--t) as we always suspected. As Margo Channing once said, "put your book where your heart ought to be..."

She's the gal who made Coors safe for the gay and lesbian community.

I couldn't watch all of this because my dad was in the room, but what did she say? I only heard the part where she called Bush a "good man".

She also "shared" how she wrecked the family car and then came out to her parents that very day in a sea of healing tears. Or something like that. And they hugged her and told her they loved her and just wanted her to be happy, everyone has lived happily every after. I love a story like that, don't you?

There was one moment when I actually saw Ms. Sawyer bristle, visibly. (and she gets a B+ from me, asking mostly hard questions, though not quite hard enough). Patronizing Mary -- and patronizing at all times she is -- tried to say, "so, are you really asking me if I think you're born gay?" Ms. Diane became chilly, and corrected her, "no, I asked if your parents discussed that." Mary bristled back, and made it clear she wouldn't speak for them. And dared -- with a book about the "truth" -- (-iness) to say much of her coming out experience is "private." She also made it clear she loathes Kerry and Edwards, and doesn't "vote on one issue." Sawyer: Even when it's a defining one, in terms of your rights, and who you are? Cheney demured, in the same creepy way her mother does. It allowed them to play the tape of Mama Lyn saying Kerry "isn't a nice man."

To find a nice man, you must turn to her warm Daddy, The Noble Hunter. And yes, she did hunt with him as a child. Happiness is a warm gun, dead fowl, pop and daughter dressed in orange, throwing back brewskies.

I wished Sawyer had asked why, if her family was so loving and accepting, with no problem, belief in her normalcy and partner, they didn't stress love and acceptance in other families with gay children? If is the loving business as usual for the Cheney Clan, why not endorse it being wonderful in others? Why legislate against it? But then, Mary -- our truthiness gal of the moment -- said all talks between her and Daddy are "private."

Auggie doesn't have enough self-loathing homosexuality for a good not-so-tell-all book as Cheney, PJ.

My television was in jeapordy of getting blown to smithereens last nite.
I thought that Diane did a good job. This chick is so f'd up, she wasnt going to get too far with this interview, but she did try. Her incredulity at the answers was obvious.

Elphie...I was wondering who she reminded me of!

The scary thing is, if Mary is balding, she's going to end up looking JUST like Dick.
Which is funny, considering she doesn't like it.

She has that strange Roberta Shore in any Disney movie look. (Boomers, remember Roberta Shore?) And eerily bleached hair and teeth for that sizzling Village of the Damned -- the Sequel look.

You lesbians, hot or not? Deal or no deal? Actually, when I squinted at my screen ... she looked strangely like an old not-so-butch dancer at the Gaiety. What an ironic association.

Didn't she broker this deal with Mary Matalin's assitance? And does anyone here (?!) know who ghost wrote it? Aside from the final edit by Karl Rove.

Wait.

So, it's a BAD thing that someone comes out to parents and is still loved?

...Yes, I wish it were that case for everyone, but why is it not something you'll tolerate in this case?

Regardless of who her parents are, is she not entitled to parental love?

Just asking.

Where did anyone say anything about coming out to loving parents as being bad, NY?

I think the BAD thing we're all feeling is her continued insistence that it's "private, private, private" while the Administration in which her father is A HUGE and vital cog is actively seeking to destroy the rights/freedoms she's claiming she has with them.
Talking right out of her ass.

You miss the point, NYgal. It's wonderful she came out and is loved.

What's not so wonderful is her parents' steadfast refusal to help make the case for other families with gay children, to pander to the very people who toss their children into the street when they come out. And they do, daily.

SEVEN OUT OF TEN TEEN SUICIDES ARE SEXUAL ORIENTATION/GENDER RELATED. A fact.

I'm not even demanding that they join PFLAG. One sentence, a single sentence at a press conference -- "Americans, love your gay child as we love ours. They are normal, loving people who deserve the rights and freedoms everyone else does" -- might do wonders. But never. Never. Not a word that might make a difference. They'd rather suggest that little Mary, "loved," is their personal cross to bear. So that their base can say, "look at that Dick and Lyn -- stuck with an abomination, but being FORGIVING of that rotten sinner." That allows them to have their cake and make sure they never get caught eating it. I'm delighted they love and "support" Mary. But by not helping end the intolerance in this country they are all beneath contempt.

Absolutely agree.

We ALL need to do ALL we can to end intolerance. Of all kinds.

The issue here, too, is that, not only are they not doing anything to help end it, they're actively helping promote this intolerance and, whether Cheney is removing his OWN activity promoting these issues or not, they're accepting it and checking off on it because it's definitely on the Republican agenda for election year.
Call it "Election Year Politics" all you want, things that will never go anywhere, but it's toying with me and my future.

It sounds like the interview didn't have much of a point if she didn't answer any questions. You'd think someone with that much potential to help would at least try- it seems like she's trying too hard not to rock the boat.

Mary Matalin is the editorial director of Threshold Books, the division of Simon and Schuster that publishes books for the conservative market. For several years now, Simon and Schuster has been published many influential anti-Bush books. Mary Matalin's Threshold balances out the books by James Carville, Paul Begala, Richard Clarke, James Risen, Ron Suskind and Michael Moore, among others.

Like Mary Cheney or not, she is out and in a committed relationship with her partner, Heather Poe. She is also accepted by her parents and she expects that--someday (the key word here)--she and Heather and other gay couples will have the same rights heterosexual couples have.

But like any conservative (grrrr!), she doesn't see her role as being here to HURRY along those changes. She is content to be discriminated against, for the time being. Conservatives, by definition, don't believe it is their responsibility to help others, except to help others help themselves.

That is what sticks in my craw, and the craw of most progressive gays and lesbians (and progressive straights, I suppose). But that is her choice and by coming out and coming forward, she presents ONE kind of public image. I wish she would use the public platform her opportunities have given her to speak out about gay marriage and gay bashing and gay adoption and the shameless and shameful scapegoating of gays and lesbians by the Republican party.

But, then again, I wish a LOT of people do a LOT of things that they don't do.

PJ, after reading your last post about Mary, I can't help but be reminded (and puzzled) by the Log Cabin Republicans. I always pass their president in DuPont Circle in DC, and sometimes I just want to beyotch slap him.
