otherwise the mta might be meeting today to bump fares over 20% across the board for the subways and the lirr and the metro-north and curtail services. thank goodness our president and our congress had the foresight to include this in with the billions they handed out like candy to any financial institution they could find.
i mean knowing that such a crisis would hit the middle class exceptionally hard in a time when they are already reeling and when their stimulus checks won't even cover the increase probably made them realize that they needed to do something to help those who use mass transit. after all, it's one of their cures for the environment and the planet, right?
thankfully they realized that shirt-sighted legislators - led by proudly boneheaded republicans - in the assembly would short-sightedly oppose the ravitch commission's suggestions which would have limited the increae to a more nmanageable 8%.
oh, wait...

Until the MTA addresses its payroll costs & stops paying the medical benefits for an army of ex workers (many times more than current employees) in addition to all current employees (while most workers pay a share of their costs) they will always be in the red.The big 3 got killed with legacy costs and the MTA is being buried by them.
The El on the # 7 line going to Main St Flushing is literally being held together by rust but the MTA has the funds to spruce up the the former Shea Stadium station. They have their priorities and riding public is last on the list.
Once the tolls go on east river bridges, they will have nowhere to go but up. Between taxing the rich and putting on a payroll tax (great moves in a recession) the sound you hear will be the Exodus theme - those leaving the state who are fed up with working hard and getting reamed for it.
Whatever you get from Obama, the city & state will take it and more right back. Not too stimulating.

Concerning the MTA fare hike- I'm furious. I feel like I've been slapped in the face. Not only will we be paying a HUGE increase, but the service will be cut a great deal.
Why wasn't *something* worked out to avoid these drastic measures?
This travesty is making me really hate those execs with their billions.

Posted: 3/25/09 at 11:27pmI blame Chuck You Schumer. With all of the money that is flowing out, why couldn't he grab a handful for the MTA? Reid's got his pocketful to build his train to nowhere.

Now now don't be a nit picker
Get a TV Camera & Schmumer will magically appear like a rabbit coming out of a hat
The news now says there are more increases according to the MTA. One of the spokesperson for them says they have cut to the bone. That is a really funny line I have to tell you.
They can save money on the 2 nd Avenue subway line as the subway will soon be so expensive no one can use it.One bus line they could cut with no inconvenience to anyone would be the one with the destination "Not In Service". They regularly run by me every morning.
Come on NAMO chime in with your usual nasty remark.

NAMO never has and never will "put me in my place.
I treat him for what he is. He cannot be civil and that is his problem and not mine.
