How much do the rights for musicals performed by amatuers (i.e. high school drama clubs) typically cost?

It depends on the company. MTI (Music Theatre International) tends to be the most expensive (at least from my experience). The only other two I've rented from are Samuel French and Tams-Witmark, which were slightly cheaper (by a couple hundred dollars). It also depends on where you are doing the show, how much you charge for tickets, the size of the audience, etc. There is usually a set RENTAL fee that you pay for the materials, and also a deposit that gets mailed back to you once all the supplies have been returned.

The ROYALTY fee is usually determined by the expected attendece, the venue, and the price of admission. You must pay a royalty fee for each individual performance (sometimes there is an initial royalty fee, and then each additional performance after the first one is a slightly lower fee).

I would say the most you would pay for amateur/high school rights would be about $1000, but most likely between $700 and $1000. Hope that helped! Updated On: 8/13/04 at 11:31 AM

It truly depends on the potential attendance figures as well as the ticket level cost. Other factors include the show title and the popularity of the title. You can always get a price quote on-line from MTI or R&H.....it doesn't tie you into doing the show.

It depends on the size of the auditorium and how much you charge for tickets. Royalties will usually amount to between $70 and $150 per performance.

On top of that, there is a rental fee for the materials (usually around $300 to $400) and a security deposit (around $400). The security deposit is refunded when you return the rented materials. Updated On: 8/13/04 at 11:33 AM
