As we all know Beth Leavel is perfection in the role currently...but who do you think would have made a wonderful Drowsy Chaperone if the show were produced years ago?
Personally, if the show were mounted in the 80s, I think Rue McClanahan would've been fantastic.
Elaine Stritch, too, for that matter.

This is a different thread though, right? Actresses that WOULD have made a great chaperone. Not "who would make a good standby or replacement now."
I think Bea Arthur would have been hilarious "back in her day"... and she could have belted the hell out of As We Stumble Along.

Posted: 7/27/06 at 2:24pmWhite may be weary of playing a character like Mrs Tottendale because it is so close to Rose from "The Golden Girls" (although, at this point in her career, she really shouldn't care.) I could see Stephanie J Block as The Drowsy Chaperone.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.

I like the idea of Barbara Harris! Get her back to Broadway! I love her singing in ON a Clear Day and in The Apple Tree! Sadly she hasn't returned to Broadway!
