Angel Prostitute?

My boyfriend and I went with his father to see Rent in OC last night. At intermission his dad was asking questions about everything and he thought that Mimi was a hooker and my guy told him that no, she's a dancer and all that. But, then my guy told his dad that Angel was the prostitute and I was like, "What?" I always just thought Angel was a street performer and my boyfriend had always interpretted Angel was a hooker. He thought lines like, "And a bonus, if I trimmed her tree" had a sexual connotation and I had never picked up on that. What do you all think? Was I bein naive, or is my guy just reading into things too much? Updated On: 9/20/04 at 10:22 PM

Maybe I'm being naive, too, but I always took "If I trimmed her tree" as an allusion to the fact that it's almost Christmas.

Maybe I just have a dirty mind (ah, who am I kidding? I have a filthy mind!) but I always interpreted it as sexual. Not that it makes much sense, as Angel is gay...

I never thought of angel as a hooker...at all. And during "I trimmed her tree" every time I've seen it "Angel" was motioned cutting

I forget what they're called but those things that you trim bushes with that look like big scissors that go side to side...he "chops" for lack of a better word on each beat (trim her tree) 3 chops

nope...definately not a hooker. drag queen, yes. hooker, no. I also never took the 'trim her tree' line in a sexual way. Angel is gay...why would he want to do anything sexual with women?

I never took that as sexual, but I doubt Angel is a hooker. He seems so conscious of his disease, I doubt he would want to spread it like that. Although, that aside, I guess it doesn't really matter to the story if he's a hooker...

Besides being a street performer, Angel is also an artist - a metal sculptor. When Collins meets him, he says "nice tree" in reference to the metal sculpture. And at the top of Act 2, Angel has a blow torch to break into the loft.
