Sometimes it IS announced even with no listed roles. In Les Miz, the female ensemble members are just listed as "ensemble," but if one is out, her name is on the board, saying the roles usually played by [blank] will be played by [name of swing].

^ If your referring to the current Broadway Production of Les Miz, everyone has a listed role, be it "Factory Workers" or "Whores" or "Sailors" etc. They are all listed under some role. Hence if one is absent they would be announced.
