So I just got back from my 4 day trip to NYC, which was amazing by the way. I saw Avenue Q, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, See What I Wanna See, and Spelling Bee. Be prepared for this to be very long. I like detail.
First...
Avenue Q: I was so excited that I finally had the chance to see this show. And I was doubly excited that I got to see it before Stephanie left. The show itself was great. Absolutely hilarious. I have to say, I was absolutely floured by the puppet work. Especially with Nicky and Trekkie Monster with two people doing it. They worked together so perfectly. I was amazed. Stephanie was amazing and adorable. She made Kate Monster so lovable, and I loved her work as Lucy. I have always wondered, though, if there is a reason why they didn't just get a couple more people to be the extra characters so Stephanie and Barrett and the guy that plays Trekkie didn't have to do two. It seems like they should just hire a couple more people and they don't have to do multiple parts. Barrett was great. What a cutie. He's just adorable. He was great- don't have much else to say. The rest of the cast was wonderful. They make an amazing ensemble. My favorite part of the show was the Empire State Building part. Very cool. I got the Kate Monster window card and waited after the show for them to sign. Everyone except Natalie (Gary Coleman) and Jennifer (I think that's her name) came out. They were all very nice and willing to talk, take pictures, and sign. A few people were waiting for Barrett, but after he came out, there were only two people left. Turns out the other person waiting was very nice and knows a lot of theatre people and stuff. We had a good time talking. Stephanie came out and was a doll and talked to us for a minute. My new favorite person is the guy that played Trekkie (is his name Christian or something?) He was so sweet after the show. He was funny and cracked some jokes and took off his hat for the picture because it was covering his face. Overall, a hilarious show and a great night at the theatre.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels: Saw DRS on Friday night. Had understudies for Joanna (I was very disappointed) and Sara. The understudies were AMAZING. Especially for Joanna. I'm sad I missed her, but I love seeing understudies, and this one was great. I don't remember who it was, but I will look it up later. Overall the show was amazing. Norbert was cracking everybody up from start to finish (does he always do the mooning thing?). I was so excited to see him live after hearing him on L5Y and Wicked and stuff. He didn't disappoint. Great Big Stuff was great. He just had the whole house laughing from start to finish- what can I say? John was very good. I really believed that he loved Christine. My other new favorite person is Greg Jbara. What an amazing man. And hilarious to boot. His character was my favorite in the show. He reminded me of a mixture of Lumiere from BATB and Michele of Gilmore Girls because of the accent and the attitude. He and the understudy were so great together. And, to save the best for last, Sherie Rene Scott. What an amazing performer. I absolutely adore her. Her acting was great, but what a voice! As much as I loved her in this, she needs to have a bigger part. Christine is way too small for her. But she rocked it. Dirty Rotten Number was my favorite number during the show. Norbert and John just look like they are having so much fun on stage the whole night. The show was very smooth- no screw ups or anything. The ensemble of this show was great, though. They were so into it the whole time. One of the best I have ever seen. After the show I waited for the cast. I just barely had enough time to buy a window card and throw a few dollars to BCEFA before I got out there to see Norbert coming out the door ready to sign. Like maybe ten minutes after the show ended. He signed a few people's stuff, took a few pictures, and then left really quickly to catch a train. He signed both my L5Y cd and DRS poster, which was very nice. John came out next and signed quickly as well. There were not too many people waiting at the stage door, but they were waiting for him. He didn't take any pictures and was rushed to his car after signing a few. He was very nice, though. After John left, most of the crowd left except for about 4 of us. Greg came out next. He was SO NICE. He talked to everyone for a few minutes and took pictures. Apparently, I was the first person to get a photo with him in his winter hat or something. We talked for a few minutes, and it turns out he got married just down the road from me. Small world. Great guy. I waited a few more minutes for Sherie, but she didn't come out. I was disappointed, but she's got a kid and husband, so it's very understandable.
SWIWS and Bee to come a little later.
