What are the best, most well-respected one-person shows for a woman in her 40's?
definitely look into William Luce's THE LAST FLAPPER (original title: ZELDA) about Zelda Fitzgerald. There's also one about....Emily Dickinson I think.
One of the most popular is Jane Wagner's The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe.
The Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All....or not, because its terrible.
Shirley Valentine is always popular. Also the recent Bad Dates.

Julie Harris did a couple -- "The Belle of Amherst" (Emily Dickinson) and "Lucifer's Child" (Isak Dineson). Mary-Louise Wilson did a long, critically acclaimed run of "Full Gallop" several seasons ago Off-Broadway about Vogue editor Diana Vreeland. Fiona Shaw won a Drama Desk a few years ago for "THe Wasteland." If you're a great mimic, you could try for Anna Deveare Smith's shows "Fires In the Mirror" and "Twilight: Los Angeles 1992"
I loved Elaine Stritch at Liberty.

Singing if it's minimal...i.e., definitely not a musical. One or two songs for some dramatic reason, if that's possible, would be okay...
I suggest too "Shirley Valentine". A great play

Bea Arthur on Broadway HANDS DOWN!!! Sometimes I swear she and Carol Channing are men... listen to Carol's "Jazz Baby" record-- listen to how low she sings, sounding like Ol' Man River...

I would also check out MONSTER, Dael Orlandersmith's one woman show. She is a fantastic writer and performer. Also pieces of Sarah Jones's SURFACE TRANSIT might work.
