Curious to hear what everyones opinons are of this years largest spectacle. Also what do you think has been the largest spectacle to ever appear on the broadway stage?

This year? Shrek without a doubt.

In history? If you're restricting to just Broadway, Wicked, Young Frankenstein, Phantom, or either Mary Poppins, Lion King, or Beauty, the largest Disney shows. In London? Lord of the Rings, without question. Hunchback in anywhere else in Europe. However, including Vegas? Tie between Ka and Phantom, with Ka probably winning for budget.

Biggest spectacle? Assuming you're not asking about some incompetent making a complete fool of himself, the one that came immediately to mind was VIA GALACTICA, with its trampolined stage (it takes place on a planet with very low gravity) and the spaceship that flew out over the audience. This was the inaugural production at the Uris (now Gershwin) Theater, which of course now houses what is probably currently the most spectacular show on Broadway.

Well, currently I would say Lion King. It was AMAZING in my (then) 9 year old mind. What with the huge sun and all of the actors on stilts

Mary Poppins is a big spectacle, they definately put on a production of it :)
it was good
And as for Lion King, eh, I liked the opening and closing numbers, but it was just was not what everyone made it seem to be, it was a little underwhelming

I saw both MP and LK when I went to London last year, and I'd say MP is miles above LK in my opinion! Maybe it was the cast of LK? I just think that the sets in MP and how they do everything is quite amazing

I was nine when I saw LK. It was my first Bway show and I was just in awe of it all. But it probably was because I was nine.

All I really rember is the opening number, Just Can't Wait to be King, and the lioness dance, and those numbers were all pretty spectacular

Lion King!!! With Little Mermaid running a close second. Disney does things all out.

Wicked still holds the title of "biggest spectacle" in my opinion. It's just... massive. And, for lack of a better word, spectacular. It's eye candy.

Really anything done by Disney is going to be a spectacle.

WICKED is, all quibbles about the material aside, the Broadway spectacle to end all Broadway spectacles.

I would say the Disney trio, Wicked, Phantom, Cats and Miss Saigon.
I'd say the biggest spectacle of the year would have to be either Little Mermaid and Shrek.

You're reminding me of people you hear at the movies asking questions every ten seconds, "Who is that? Why is that guy walking down the street? Who's that lady coming up to him? Uh-oh, why did that car go by? Why is it so dark in this theater?" - FindingNamo on strummergirl

"If artists were machines, then I'm just a different kind of machine...I'd probably be a toaster. Actually, I'd be a toaster oven because they're more versatile. And I like making grilled cheese" -Regina Spektor

"That's, like, twelve shows! ...Or seven." -Crazy SA Fangirl

"They say that just being relaxed is the most important thing [in acting]. I take that to another level, I think kinda like yawning and...like being partially asleep onstage is also good, but whatever." - Sherie Rene Scott
