OMG!!!!! Someone has finally heard of Brooklyn!!! This show was in Denver last summer as a "practice run" before the show was to open in NY on Broadway. THIS IS AN AMAZING SHOW!!! One of the local newspapers here said "Brooklyn delivers what Rent only promised." That is so true!

If you are familiar with the current cast of Wicked, then you know that Idina's standby is Eden Espinosa. She played Brooklyn, the title character. She is the most amazing singer I have ever heard.

I'm so jealous of your friend and the fact that she is/was working on the show. Have you heard for sure that it is supposed to be on Broadway in the fall? Last time I heard was that the producer (Jeff Calhoun) was waiting until his revival of Big River was off Broadway before Brooklyn was to premiere.

If you want to know more about the show, let me know...I could go on for days!

Yes, Brooklyn is really coming to Broadway. If you didn't get the chance to see this musical in Denver last summer don't miss it in NY. Eden Espinosa will star in the title role. She is awesome. The show opens October 21st.

I am so excited to finally get confirmation that Brooklyn is opening on Broadway. I'm going to be in NY in a couple of weeks (seeing Wicked, Lion King, Boy from Oz, and Hairspray by the way), but now it sounds like I need to plan another trip in October to see the show open! Did you see the show in Denver?

It would be great if we finally do get to see Brooklyn, but it is one of those shows that has been announced more than once... First it was supposed to come in the fall, then Jeff Calhoun said it would start rehearsals in January, 2004 and now it is next fall. It seems they are serious this time, but, I won't totally believe it until I hear a theater!

A street corner in Brooklyn provides the background for a troop of homeless street performers as modern day apostles. For some spare change and a few moments of your time, they will shed their homeless skin and become the bigger than life characters in a tale of discovery. Brooklyn is a sweeping saga of a beautiful young Parisian songstress, whose fame and fortune could not fill the emptiness in her soul. Believing in her heart that the father she never knew might somehow, somewhere still be alive, she embarks on a search which leads to the city that bears her name. It is there she learns about the ‘American Way’ and is confronted with greed, envy, and loss. But there, on that street corner, she discovers…identity. Brooklyn is a soulful new musical that examines the true meaning of family, fame, faith and fate.

Well it seems that Brooklyn Bound is somehow associated with the show...that description was in the pamphlet that they handed out for the show. Either that or he/she saw the show in Denver like I did.
Anyway...
One of the most interesting aspects of the show is that it is a musical within a musical. Street performers on a non-descript Brooklyn street perform a "sidewalk fairy tale" about Brooklyn, whose search for her father led her back to New York from Paris. The coolest part of the show is that you get so involved in the story and the songs that you forget that it's actually the street performers acting the play out. That is, until you watch them change the "sets" on stage in front of you. Plus the plastic Twister board for a dress, the Kentucky Fried Chicken box for a purse, and police "CAUTION" tape used as evening apparel will remind you that the characters are being played by street performers. Not to sound cliche, but it's a story of redemption and the resilience of the human spirit.
Several people in the local media compared Brooklyn to Rent, but I feel like the talented performers in the show are far superior to the original cast of Rent. Like I've said before, Eden Espinosa will reach the depths of your soul with her voice, especially when she sings "Once Upon a Time" and when she performs the duet with the Streetsinger toward the end of the show. I have never seen a theater audience react so strongly and positively to anyone's performance.

"I've got Brooklyn in the blood, a fire in my eyes...Brooklyn's how I live my life, Brooklyn's how I die!"
