Shows reported in development:
“The Addams Family”- slated for Broadway in 2009-10
“Bruce Lee: Journey to the West”- book by David Henry Hwang
“Saved"- already is on the Playwrights Horizon season for next spring, with a Broadway future possible thereafter
“Beauty Sleeping”- a feminist, musical retelling of the fairy tale
“1968”- to feature original music by Sheryl Crow
They all seem very...interesting. Discuss.
If the producers have a lick of sense, they'll thank David Henry for his work to date and send him packing. The guy hasnt written a decent book for a musical yet, and further to the point: wouldnt a stage piece about someone like Bruce Lee work better as a dance piece? Lee was all about action and movement, not standing there singing a ballad in Act Two.
Sheryl Crow could be pretty cool as a songwriter for the stage; I've long loved her stuff. My only fear is that it's going to be stereotypical "counter culture" nonsense -- more a self-induced parody of HAIR than anything else. But hey, anything's possible, I guess.
The rest? At this point, dismissable.
But Bruce Lee" will feature a score by David Yazbeck, which is always a good thing.
I think Saved is great material for an original musical.
*bump*
