Posted: 3/4/04 at 12:10pmI just hope it's not another "concert-staged" revival. What's wrong with having a few sets?

Posted: 3/4/04 at 12:19pmI am sure it will be a full revival. As for the bigger news, KRISTINA!!! This show is truly incredible. For anyone who does not know it, its more of a modern opera then a musical and the music is truly incredible. I urge everyone to go out and buy the swedish cast recording(3 discs long) it is unbelievable.

Posted: 3/4/04 at 4:15pmActually, I'd rather see a good Chess concert. Attempts at making it a book show have been rather unsuccessful. Just give the people the music and leave it at that.

Posted: 3/4/04 at 7:05pmI find the version that toured Europe and was recorded in English is the best version around.

I actually quite love the version that the Actors' Fund performed!
Would be impossible to get that cast for a revival though.

Posted: 3/12/04 at 8:33pmWhile I can admire the music, I find Chess to be a pretty lifeless show and so so slow.Is the story not a little out of date now? All that cold war stuff.Unless there is some pretty remarkable casting this new production will lay an egg.

alterego - The Cold War was historical. How can it be out of date? Was Miss Saigon out of date because it involved Vietnam War? Was Aida out of date because it involves ancient Egypt? What about The Producers, Assassins, 42nd Street, Caroline or Change, Little Shop of Horrors, The Boy From Oz, Chicago, Fiddler on the Roof, Gypsy, Hairspray, Movin' Out, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Wonderful Town? All of those took place in past eras as well.
I do think Chess would be one of the best candidates for film. Considering it's intricate plot, it would probably work better on film than on stage, but I would love to see it on stage again.

Posted: 3/19/04 at 1:41amI can't help but wonder if people who get excited at the prospect of seeing a revival of Chess have ever sat through a performance. I saw the original in London, I saw it in Sydney, I saw it in Melbourne and they have to be some of the dullest evenings I've ever spent in the theatre. It has a couple of good songs sure, but really there is no show. The main characters just aren't well enough drawn to make you remotely care about them. No, this is one to give a wide berth to.
