Which one do you think has a better chance of staying on Broadway till November?

THE COLOR PURPLE will definitely be open in November.

SWEENEY might be open in November...it's not doing incredibly well, but we'll see what it's few Tony's do for it in a couple weeks. It will also have something to do with whether Patti stays with the show.

Yeah, The Color Purple will definitely still be open.

Company is opening in November-ish, which wont help Sweeney either.

Don't know how Sweeney is doing, but Color Purple is selling well and should have no problem making it past the fall slump.

Slight threadjack - but is The Color Purple any good? The CD, to me, is just boring. I haven't heard such great reviews from those not directly involved in the show. I don't think it's even a serious contendor for best musical (behind Drowsy and JB). It seems the show is running on Oprah-fumes, which of course can make it the longest running show on Broadway if she chooses.

Sweeney on the other hand - I saw it a few weeks ago and was as blown away by it as I was seeing an old video of the OBC years ago.

No, THE COLOR PURPLE isn't very good. It's mediocre at best. But, unfortunately, briliance or goodness has nothing to do with a show's run...

Don't make me laugh, there's NO contest whatsoever.

Sweeney Todd is leaps and bound above The Color Purple. It is a phenomenal area.

Respectfully disagree with Munk...I love "TCP" !

I think there are numerous standout performances, and I totally disagree with the "two-horse race" theory re the Tony award...

Would like to think that "TCP" has as decent as a chance of winning as "JB" or "Drowsy" (which I happen to like as well.. I just think "TCP" is a better musical)

Sweeney recouped it's whole investment in just under a few months so anything now is profit, I think. At the very least, it's making money, which I don't think Purple is. I think the minute Cerveris announces he's leaving, the show will end, so I'm guessing a run through at least November.

Even though Sweeney recouped its initial investments, as with any show, there are still costs to keep it running. Because Sweeney Todd is relatively cheap to produce, it needs to stay at over 50% attendance for it to be profitable.

The grosses have declined, yes, but they've been slowly and steadily climbing in the last weeks. The Tony Awards are likely to help the show during the summer. I do think Sweeney Todd has a good chance to still be running in November (Doyle, at least, is confident in this, as evidenced by the BWW Q&A, although, of course, it's not up to him). It's a cheap show to run, and as long as it turns a nice profit, there's really no reason to close it before November.

Moxie is correct. The Color Purple was a nice show. It has energetic songs.

I loved both. I was moved by the Color Purple. The performances by Felicia P Fields blew me away. I went twice.
I LOVE IT! I would like to see it a third time.
I adore Sondheim, and Sweeney is one of his greatest shows.
Cerveris and LuPone are perfection.
See both. They are very different shows. But both are excellent. Updated On: 6/3/06 at 07:18 PM
