Company question

Posted: 8/13/05 at 1:25pmI was listening to Company, and there's a line I've never understood. During Side by Side by Side, one of the men says "Whenever I see him, he reminds me of the Seagrams building. Isn't that funny?" What does that mean???

Posted: 8/13/05 at 1:56pmThe Seagram Building is a building in New York City made of a certain material (bronze, I think) that makes it possible for those inside to see out, but those outside cannot see in, much like Bobby.

Posted: 8/13/05 at 2:50pmSondheim is a genius. I thought it had to do with drinking also, but it was the word "building" that prompted the question. Sondheim wouldn't leave something that random in there -- especially not after what's being discussed in the Into the Woods thread somewhere else about the motifs and stuff. Honestly, the more I listen to his stuff, the more I wonder how anyone could possibly not consider him the greatest musical theater writer of all time.

thanks Governor. I always thought it referred to the fact that the Seagram's Building (c 1958 )was one of the first 'International Style' skyscrapers built on staid Park Avenue. Ahead of its time, breaking the mold, 'hard' materials like steel and marble, etc. But I like your interpretation better. Or it just could be a reference to the fact that one of the architects of the Seagram's Building was Philip Johnson, a big closet case
