Posted: 2/19/09 at 5:47pmAre theater owners just offering fire sale rates on space right now? I cannot imagine that this could be profitable in the economy in a house so large unless they are. That said--who cares?! I just can't wait to see it!

Posted: 2/19/09 at 6:03pmChill. It's a limited run. We need the out-of-town work anyway, and it's such a technical show - we're just taking a "9 to 5"-style six month break.

This is EXCELLENT news. I'm really excited about the direction Broadway is going. One would think the producers would be taking sure-fire hits over quality, but instead, we have a lineup of shows coming in that are looking to be great instead of just tourist draws.
Also, I'm DYING to see Carla Gugino in something after I had to forfeit my ticket to "Suddenly, Last Summer."

Posted: 2/19/09 at 6:12pmCarla Gugino? I just died and went to heaven. I am so excited to see this. Plus I am quite partial to the St. James.

WOW. Just wow.
This play revival category this year is absurd.. And the St. James?? They got some bold producers...

Carla Gugino is so flipping fantastic in this... I can't even tell you. I know it's an extremely competitive season... but she's got a great shot at that Tony award.

Posted: 2/19/09 at 7:08pmAwfully large theatre for a play, isn't it? The last time a play was in that theatre was 1989.

Posted: 2/19/09 at 7:20pmGreat news. I'm worried about it being in the St. James, though.

Whoooooooo! I'm so excited to see this. The St. James to me didn't seem that big when i was in it. I mean, it is a big house, but I didn't feel it was too big. Not like Gypsy was a big show.
Funny cause I was walking by the St. James today and I thought "sad, it won't have a tenant until next year with Minksys...."

Posted: 2/19/09 at 7:45pmThe St. James isn't that large. (Sit in the mezz -- you aren't miles from the stage). But this move seems based on the one Times review, no? I'm happy for the parties who will be up for Tony's, but as always, where are the new American plays? We need new productions of new works, exciting new material. Revivals, even deconstructions like this one, should be part of a season, not the centerpiece. I miss new plays, big time.

DIVIDING THE ESTATE and THE AMERICAN PLAN are new American plays.
YOU'RE WELCOME, AMERICA -- despite what some think of it -- will also be eligible for Best Play.

IRENA'S VOW and REASONS TO BE PRETTY are also new American plays.
It's more than we can say for the past few seasons.
We have mostly had imports.

Posted: 2/19/09 at 8:06pmExcited, because the creative team and cast is dynamite, but really worried- how the hell is this thing going to fit into the St. James?
#22re: Desire Under the Elms Starring Dennehy and Gugino Headed to St. James T
Posted: 2/19/09 at 8:08pmThey should close off the balcony the way the producers of NEXT TO NORMAL are doing with the Longacre.

In regards to the theater being to large... this production is HUGE! Very over the top... relishes in the invocation of Greek tragedy. Hopefully there won't be too many empty seats.
