"Doubt" is confirmed

Posted: 2/10/05 at 9:17pmIt's no big surprise, but "Doubt" will be the next show to occupy the Walter Kerr. Previews begin March 9 for a March 31 opening. It will feature the standard Broadway performance schedule, as opposed to the MTC schedule, which has no Wednesday matinee and two shows on Sunday. The cast will remain intact.

Posted: 2/17/05 at 8:52pmWe are thinking of taking friends to the California production of Doubt, but are a little concerned about the subject matter for them. If anyone who has seen it could give just a brief idea as to the depth that the subject matter is explored and/or displayed, I would appreciate it.

Posted: 2/17/05 at 9:00pmIt goes very deep, and some may find it uncomfortable. I would say to just go with your best judgement.

Posted: 2/17/05 at 9:04pmI cannot WAIT. Mef, will you be going again once it eropens?

Posted: 2/17/05 at 9:06pmI'm sure I will, but it probably won't be at the top of my list, since I've already seen it. Such a good show. Cherry and Brian...ahh! Just sheer brilliance.

Posted: 2/17/05 at 9:08pmAnd I'm so glad it's playing at one of my absolute FAVORITE theatres...I feel very comfortable there - every seat is great, and it's very accessible.

Posted: 2/17/05 at 9:12pmThe Walter Kerr is my favorite theatre on Broadway, probably my favorite in New York.

Posted: 2/17/05 at 9:18pmgood for this show. i'm really happy for it. it seems to be turning into a big season for the plays this year, huh?

Posted: 2/17/05 at 9:21pmDefinitely. The "12 Angry Men" revival is a smash, and MTC has been having a really terrific season. In the next two months, revivals of some of the most acclaimed and beloved plays ever will open, along with new works like "The Pillowman" and the aforementioned "Doubt".

Posted: 2/17/05 at 9:26pmWhile there are a lot of plays, there aren't a lot of NEW plays - mostly starry play revivals, like Streetcar, Glass Menagerie, Julius Caesar, On Golden Pond, Virginia Woolf and Glengarry Glen Ross. This season features only five NEW plays altogether: Democracy and The Pillowman, both of which come from London's National Theatre, Doubt and Brooklyn Boy, both of which were produced by the non-profit Manhattan Theatre Club, and Gem of the Ocean, which was fostered and developed through the non-profit regionals. After Brooklyn Boy ends its limited run on March 27, Doubt will be the only new American play on Broadway. Not quite like the Broadway of old...or even the Broadway of 25 years ago, when new American plays were still often good and plentiful.

Posted: 2/17/05 at 9:29pmIt is a play, set in 1964 in the Bronx, about a priest (Brian O'Byrne) who is accused of molesting a young boy, who also happens to be the first black student accepted by the Catholic school.

Posted: 2/17/05 at 9:31pmIt's a play, set in the Bronx in 1964, about a nun who suspects a priest of taking too much interest in one of her male students. Opened in November, to universal raves. Stars Tony-winners Cherry Jones and Brian O'Byrne. Written by John Patrick Shanley (Moonstruck), directed by Doug Hughes (Frozen).

Posted: 2/17/05 at 9:33pmAnd Passion Play has been delayed and will not open in time for this season's Tony cut-off. Roundabout has extended 12 Angry Men through May 8.

PASSION PLAY is produced by Roundabout, not MTC.
MTC is producing AFTER THE NIGHT AND THE MUSIC, the new Elaine May play.

Posted: 2/17/05 at 9:35pmah yes, now i remember reading about that. so sorry to be behind! i didn't realize it was a revival, i've never heard of it or seen it before. but i still think it's great that we can have all these great plays produced, because even if they're revivals i'll take some shakespeare or tennessee williams over good vibrations and brooklyn any time. you know?

Very true.
PASSION PLAY was produced off-Broadway in 1984, I believe, with Frank Langella.

Posted: 2/17/05 at 9:38pmPassion Play played these shores once before as Passion, which played at the Longacre Theatre in the early 80s. For Roundabout's revival, it will be reverting to its original title, Passion Play.

Oh, I thought PASSION PLAY was off-Broadway. I've only ever seen it regionally. I guess they don't want any confusion between it and Sondheim's PASSION.
AFTER THE NIGHT AND THE MUSIC will be the first play of the 2005-06 season.
