I was horrified to learn that there have been many amputations as a result of this accident.

My prayers are with all involved!

It's so f***ing windy out!!! I was literally nearly blown over while crossing the street... the wind keeps hitting my window and it sounds like someones trying to break into my apartment -- some scary stuff! And let's not even START with my hair which looked super cute when I left my apartment this morning.

I feel so horrible about the ferry incident... it's a good thing they shut the rest down. Poor Staten Islanders... they're gonna have a helluva time getting home on those buses tonight. It's going to be SO crowded!

Tell me about it! I was beginning to feel lifted off of the sidewalk, and (thanks to the rack) I'm not exactly light as a feather.

I also hope that the NYU-ers on the board are doing well in the wake of the recent suicide there.

Oh, my... what news to learn first thing in the morning. I used to take the Ferry to work every day when I was working in Manhattan. The pictures are just terrible. My sympathies to all who lost loved ones and to the injured.

The accident had nothing to do with the winds; the boat went into the dock at 25MPH without slowing down. Fortunately I cut my last class and went home early (by way of express bus) rather than taking the ferry like I usually do around that time (3pm).
I guess cutting class can pay off sometimes. It actually went through on the side where I always sit coming home re: Everyone OK?
The boat was just going so fast, and the edges of the dock went right through the side of the boat. As far as I know (as of 9pm last night...b/c I just couldn't take anymore after that) 15 people were confirmed dead, and 10 people had been taken to the hospital with missing limbs. Rescuers were still looking for people last I heard; And (this could be a rumor, but I heard it on newsradio, and from a police officer who was at the accident site), the captain on the ferry who was at fault, jumped ship and tried to kill himself and is now in the hospital. He had slit his wrists apparently.
It should be interesting getting on the ferry in a couple of hours. I'm not exactly looking foward to it. re: Everyone OK?

It's another sad episode in the lives of people from New York. May I extend my sympathy to anyone here who may have suffered a personal loss or who have been affected somehow by this unfortunate accident.

Kec - I remember how you have once mentioned being a Staten Islander.

Yes, Jo, I grew up on Staten Island and I still have family there, who do take the ferry. Thankfully they are ok, but it's upsetting to see that so many people have been killed and hurt. Theatrebaby, glad to see you're ok.

Thanks Kec :) I'm just grateful that I wasn't on the boat, or even nearby at the time to see it. I don't think I would have been able to get on the ferry today if I had seen it yesterday in person. I did see the boat up close today on my way to and from school. It's such a horrific mess.
The worst part was waiting to hear from friends and family that take that boat re: re: re: re: re: Everyone OK? Fortunately everyone I know was fine (though some were on that boat, and walked away with a bruise or two). I just feel so sorry for the families of the people who died or were injured.

This was just awful! It seems like NYC's luck couldn't get any worse.

I never really know what to say. I feel so sorry for those who lost someone and at the same time, I'm glad that no one in our little "family" was hurt.

It does seem like NYC has had more than it's fair share of hurts over the past few years. I'm not foolish enough to think nothing will ever happen again but let's hope this is the last for quite awhile.
