I know there's been talk about the length of his hair..."Why would he have long hair if he's trying to impress his conservative future in-laws?" Well, I caught a part of the original movie. The actor who is playing the son (whose name is Laurent, not Jean-Michel) has longer hair. So the producers and director probably took liberty with the length of his hair.
Thought I'd just add that to anyone who was wondering.

Posted: 5/6/05 at 10:36amI didn't bother me when I saw the show. He'd look sexy in a paperbag.

Posted: 5/6/05 at 10:37amI know that the director was going for a very "European feel" with the character - maybe that's it...

Posted: 5/6/05 at 11:16amI thought he looked and acted effeminate. But thats just my opinion.

Posted: 5/6/05 at 11:19amI know, and it's really hard not to look BUTCH next to Gary Beach and La Cagelles!

Posted: 5/6/05 at 11:35amI prefer the original, John Weiner. He looked better, and never came off gay.

Posted: 5/6/05 at 11:37amHe must be a great actor if his last name is Weiner and he didn't come off as gay!

Posted: 5/6/05 at 11:42amI agree that his performance was rather effeminate. Kinda threw a confusing wrench into the plot.

Posted: 5/6/05 at 11:50amI think he's using Ann Miller's former stylist.

Posted: 5/6/05 at 11:54amYou thought Gavin Creel came off as effeminate? Really? I sure didn't think so.

Posted: 5/6/05 at 12:32pmJBOY1 ~ Thanks for your passing observation. However, I think you are really going out on a limb with this idea. For those of us who lived through the late 1970's, (when the original film was made) the length of the actors hair in the film is quite in line with the times. Dear Gavin's awful hair style (not just long and in a pony tail, but dirty looking as well) is just the tip of all that is terrible with his performance in "La Cage aux Folles". His acting would seem to be more at home on a high school stage. Granted he can sing, but there is little else to keep your interest. I saw the show several times in previews, and on more than one occasion, Gavin was wearing a short haired wig. So, perhaps the producers are also not completely thrilled with his "doo". Also, I never believed for a second that he was even interested in Ann, much less hopelessly in love with her. He seemed to be flirting more with Daniel Davis (Georges) than Angela Gaylor (Ann).

I completely disagree. I think Gavin is one of the easiest people to watch on a stage. His voice, charm and charisma clearly comes across in La Cage. He is undoubtedly one of the most graceful performers on Broadway, but I don't think it translates to effeminate whatsoever.
As far as his hair goes, he contractually doesn't have to cut it. If it doesn't look good, it's then up to designers and directors to solve the problem and has nothing to do with his ability to perform the role.

Posted: 5/6/05 at 12:56pmWell; I disagree. I think he looks and acts like the biggest queen on that stage. And it is one of the many things wrong with this production.

It's an OPINION!
Remember, we all have one!
#18re: Gavin's hair in LA CAGE
Posted: 5/6/05 at 1:58pmI believe actually that Gavin didn't want to cut his hair and the Producers/director eventually gave in and let him keep it long. I believe I heard he wants it long for his solo stuff that he's been working on.

Posted: 5/6/05 at 3:25pmDame, either you resent the fact that YOU didn't land the role or you just don't like him at all for your own personal reasons and are making absurd statements about him, but he totally plays that character quite well. If the director didn't like his hair the way it is they would have given him a wig. Gavin is a wonderful and talented actor and singer and many people went to see La Cage because He was in it.

Posted: 5/6/05 at 3:41pmNot too be out done. I'll add my second post to this thread. SHOWSTOPPER If you would have read my post, you would have seen that I stated there were times when Gavin was wearing a wig during his performance. I'm doubtful that he was doing this on his own, most likely he was asked to try it. It does not matter the length of his hair, long, short, or bald. It's his obvious lack of talent has an actor that is the problem. He does nothing with this character, he walks through the performance with just blah blah blah on the same note.
