first of all, who do you prefer?
and for the real question- which one is more relevant, or has transfered better to today?
Thats a tough one. I prefer Porter because I like all his material where as gershwin, I have a few favorites. Relevance to today? Both! You can present an audience with Porgy and Bess and they'll be weeping walking out of the theater and you can show them Anything Goes and they'll be tapping their toes the entire time. Its timeless music.
interesting. see, for me I prefer Gershwin melodies, and he is just my personal favorite becuase he also dabbled in classical music. it doesnt' get any better for me than "rhapsody in blue". Porter is really starting to grow on me however, I'm starting to understand his style of comedy in music.
I could never pick a favorite between these two. They can each touch that special spot inside me - depending on the mood I'm in! There are days and times when only Gershwin will do. The same is true for Porter. (Two of my all-time favorite recordings are Ella Fitzgerald sing the Cole Porter Songbook, and Levant (Oscar) Plays Gershwin.)
Hard decision. I think Gershwin might beat out Porter by a tiny bit, but they're still all amazing. They are also very relevant...Gershwin might be slightly more well-known (I knew of THEM way before Porter), but their songs still fit in with life today, and are exceedingly catchy.

What you are all ignoring is the fact that "Gershwin" is two people. George wrote music, and his brother Ira wrote lyrics. I would think the "relevance" of the songs is dependant on the lyrics. Personally, I can relate much more to the working-class feel of Ira Gershwin's lyrics as opposed to the mansion-dwelling, martini-sipping society depicted in Porter's work.
Can you, dahling? *swill swill*
I'm not ignoring the fact that Ira Gershwin wrote the lyrics to their songs. But if you'll note my favorite Gershwin album is all music, no vocals, because it was the MUSIC that was so thrilling to me.

geez, what a choice
I'll have to go with Gershwin. If more performers could do Porter without mangling it and making it boring then Porter might've won.
I love them both, but Gershwin was so inventive with his music. Porgy and Bess is such a great work that just overshadows everything that Porter did.
