I'm going to be in NYC for ONE day, May 13th and will only be able to see a matinee. What should I see? (I lived in New York for 6 years and saw everything, now there's so much I've yet to see.) Some of my thoughts are SWEENEY, LESTAT, AVE Q, SPAMALOT, WICKED, SPELLING BEE... and the list goes on. What do you think?

Avenue Q or Spelling Bee. They're unlike anything you have probably ever seen on Broadway before. I think you'd really enjoy either.

I'd say Sweeney...I'd pick a show that won't be around for much longer...

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

<--- the set of A Midsummer Night's Dream that I was assistant stage manager for during the 2007 season at the STNJ outdoor stage.

-Dre-
You must remember all the same that at the crux of every game is knowing when it's time to leave the table... And it's important to be artful in your exit. No turning back, you must accept the con is done... It was a ball, it was a blast. And it's a shame it couldn't last. But every chapter has to end, you must agree.
~Dirty Rotten Scoundrels~

There's a special kind of people known as show people. We live in a world full of dreams. Sometimes we're not too certain what's false and what's real. But we're seldom in doubt about what we feel.

It is a far, far better thing I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest I go to, than I have ever known.

Unbiased opinion, Sweeney.

I wouldn't see Sweeny unless you are already familiar with the show. I went and saw it not really knowing anything about the plot and the staging and everything really confused me. I would recomend Light in the Piazza which is closing in July or Spamalot which was hilarious. Or Wicked definately if you haven't seen it yet! :) Have fun!

Wicked is going to be around for a while so skip that.

I would say Sweeney and Woman in White. (WIW IS BETTER IMO)

I agree, don't see Sweeney unless you are a fan of the show....or the performers. I enjoyed it, but there's certainly more entertaining shows.....but then again, that is all a matter of opinion.

Don't see ANYTHING that will tour. It makes sense to see shows that will most likely end their lives without ever living the city. I would say see something like Avenue Q (even when it closes in Vegas it won't tour) or Sweeney Todd. Lestat might not last long either, so you may want to suffer, er, see that one.

I'd say Sweeney Todd. I don't think you need to be familiar with the show first. I really wasn't and I adored it. It's fantastic but likely not to be playing for as long as some of the others.

Haven't seen Piazza but I hear it is good. Seeing it in the Spring. I agree that if you don't know Sweeney, don't see it until you are familiar with the original. Maybe rebt the DVD and watch it to see if you like it. If you do, then see Sweeney Todd. It is the best thing I have seen since Caroline or Change. Although other shows mentioned here are well worth seeing.

I want to tell you with all my heart..SEE SWEENEY TODD. But,
if you are the kinda person that doesn't listen, go see Light in the Piazza.
Either way you will win.

SEE SWEENEY TODD! My friend had no idea what it was about and she is kinda a dumb blonde and she thought it was excellent. So I dont think you have to see it before hand.

I'm kinda a dumb blonde too, and I agree that you should see Sweeney Todd. re: Going to NYC for 1 day
I'm ashamed to admit it, but when I first saw the Sweeney revival, I only knew that it was about a barber who kills his clients. Being familiar with the show probably does help you get more out of it, but I definitely don't think it's necessary. I didn't have a problem following it, and my parents, who knew less about the show than I did, enjoyed it as well. Sweeney is quite possibly my favorite out of the shows I've seen. I think Avenue Q would be my second choice.

Depends on what you like. I hated Sweeney Todd. I also hated Piazza and Spamalot. I love Bee, Q, Wicked, Rent, DRS- more of the upbeat shows (Spam was just stupid).
You could also see Tarzan if you could get tickets, it opens May 10th.
