Posted: 12/9/03 at 6:53pmCongrats to Bway Cares Equity Fights Aids for a record breaking event this afternoon at the Palace Theater in NYC. Gypsy of The Year was wonderful. Hugh, Harvey and Bernadette gave the great show a big finish. Fun for a great cause!

Rob Bartlett was a PERFECT James Lipton and Audrey 2 was a perfect guest. =p It also featured ML Wooly as the plant and Matt Vogel as the plant *without* the crazy plant voice, lol. Hunter, Darren and Jessica were featured as students asking questions.

One of the sites described all the skits... Can't remember which. Fill us in, everyone!

Alright, Alright Already! :) Here ya go. I was there Monday afternoon.
It was far from a vintage GYPSY OF THE YEAR.
Too many of the skits were misfires: 'Reidel as God' (kinda stupid), "Audrey II at the Actor's Studio" (Not nearly as funny as it could have been. The punchline is that Audrey gets replaced for not being scary enough...and the even more frightening replacement is revealed to be...Michael Jackson. Yawn) and Lypsinkas endless drunk take on 'The 12 Days of Christmas' were the biggest groaners. GYPSY's take on a Sam Mendes CABARET version of GYPSY was a good idea that didn't quite come off, And AVENUE Q's "These Are the People in My Neighborhood" (Rod: Hugh Jackman is a person in my neighborhood...he gives me wood!") was very cute. My favorite skit was BEAUTY & the BEAST's gleeful take as "Kristin as Glinda as Roxie Hart" ("I think I'll get my OWN flying monkeys!...All the critics LOVE me! I think I made Ben Brantley straight!" "The name on every critics lips is gonna be...KRISTIN!" "Joel Grey is billed BELOW... KRISTIN!") capped by a "Ephelba" gunning her down with a tommy gun.
I will also SO miss the deliciously nasty URINETOWN skits.
"Officer Lockstock! Why do WE have to close and MILLIE keeps running! I've got a way to save our show! We can get Nathan & Matthew to come in as guest stars!"
"Little Sally...We're not THAT desperate!"
The best numbers were the simplest: direct singing and dancing: THE PRODUCERS, AIDA, NAKED BOYS SINGING (a moving memorial to Stephen Bates Baltes) LISTEN TO MY HEART (a bittersweet, roof-raising "As Long As I Can Sing") and THE BOY FROM OZ (sung in memory of Peter Allen) which recieved a surprisingly nasty post-song dig from co-host Mario Cantone: "That was beautiful but DEPRESSING!"
Not funny, Mario.

OY, Master! You liked the Boy From Oz number?
I, like Mario, found it depressing cause it was BADLY SUNG!

Ya kow, robbie..I actually DID! :)
However it was sung (and tell the truth, I didn't notice how well it was sung) I was just relieved that it was very straighforward and not attempting to be cute.
