I call bull!

Steward has directed a few smaller productions since she started at Rainier Beach, but this is her first attempt to do something bigger, even on a limited budget. She says she raised about $1,500 of the show's limited funds from her own family and friends.

Steward said she didn't know she had to get rights to the musical, adapted from the book "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." She was using a script and karaoke music she found on the Internet. When she learned she needed permission, she filed a request, but said she never heard back from the company, Samuel French Inc.

"I was just assuming everything was OK," she said. "It was definitely a learner's mistake."

Is she cute? If she's cute I'd give her a hug. But not if she's not cute.

Wow! Didn't read that far down, Julian! Might be worth the ticket to WA to see a musical written by someone who didn't know that the writers of musicals want to get paid!

Agree Lizzie- I totally call bull!

It's like that school in the Bronx that 'didn't know' they needed to get permission to stage Chicago, because their drama teacher had transcribed the movie himself, so why did they need permission for anything for, and then they were all over the news weeping because the big bad money hungry producers wouldn't let the poor widdle kiddies perform their show, until the Chicago folks were forced to allow the poor widdle kiddies to perform their show...

And so what is the lesson boys and girls? Remember: Tis easier to ask for forgiveness than to bother getting permission. (And make sure you have some poor widdle kiddies available to cry for the press, too.)

Ugh!

You are so negative! You don't even know the whole story (just by reading an article? C'mon!) and here you are.....trying to spice your life with all your drama!

:)good call, kringas

I'm not trying to spice up my boring life, just trying to make a slow day at work go faster. If she really did musicals in high school, she should know about rights. I did Oliver! in 7th grade and they made sure we knew about the rights, probably to guilt us into fundraising.

I just think, as an educator, you have a responsibility to educate your students and teach them right from wrong. You should do your research and teach them to take responsibility for their actions, and not cry their way out of their problems.

I am going back to school in the fall to become a theatre teacher and will set a better example for my pupils.

Thanks Born to Reign, I try. :)

Ok so I googled the school to read other articles, to you know- 'get the whole story,' and the quote from the teacher in this commentary is priceless:

He learned the teacher was doing the production on a $1,000 budget -- a figure he found surprisingly low considering other area high schools have put on productions for $60,000.

Malnes asked if the $1,000 was in addition to paying for royalties. "She indicated she wasn't paying royalties," Malnes said Monday. "She said she had found the script on the Internet, and if it was on the Internet, it was fine because it's for the kids."

If it's on the Internet and it's for the children then you don't need to get permission, pay royalties, etc...and this is a *teacher?*
It'd take a wizard to fix this 'Oz' mess

*sigh* and they gave her a teaching license? She must also believe that "golly, if it's on the inter-webs it's gotta be true!"

Don't we get a story like this every year? I bet there are still teachers out there that "Don't know" you can't just make copies of a book and pass them out for everyone to read.

"Didn't know" that you had to pay royalties...

That ranks up there with "The dog ate my homework"...
