Has anyone seen "Children of Eden" in DC?
#0Has anyone seen "Children of Eden" in DC?
Posted: 4/1/04 at 7:11pmI just got back from a long weekend in NY a few weeks ago and spent a lot on shows, but I, despite living in DC, have never seen a show at the Ford's Theatre. I like Schwartz' stuff and was wondering if it was worth it to pay $ for this show? Also, how are the sight lines at this theater? Any place I should not sit, if I decide to go? I usually prefer front orchestra (center, but can deal with sides) and the front center of the front mezzanine.

I wouldn't sit in the President's box. Seems to be unlucky... :)
I haven't seen it yet, but I've seen shows at Ford's before and the site lines are pretty good. Plus, Eden's a cool show (in my book, anyway).

Posted: 4/2/04 at 11:15amI've never been to the Ford, but I saw a small production of Children of Eden in Chicago and really enjoyed it. It's charming with some really wonderful moments in the score. I guess it depends how much you're willing to spend, but I'd see it again.

Posted: 4/2/04 at 1:39pmI like Ford's and have sat in different locations and saw and heard everything. I have a friend (a local critic) who saw EDEN the other night. He did not like it at all and he is a Schwartz fan.

Posted: 4/2/04 at 1:56pmI believe there are columns/supports in the balcony that might block your view if I remember right from when I was there a few months ago. They also do not have regular theatre seating, its actually wooden chairs with those chair pads on them. When I was there, we had just talked about production done in black and white on the board and I was excited because I could tell by the set it was a B&W production. Anyone know what it was? I forget... (Just visited the theatre. I didn't see the show.)

Children of Eden at Ford's is INCREDIBLE. It's the first time I've been Ford's Theatre. Like you, I was hesitant, but the tickets were half that of New York, so I figured why not.
The show was worth every cent. The actors' voices far surpass those featured on the cast recording. Especially 'Father' and 'Eve.' Her voice in 'Ain't it Good' is just amazing.
It looked pretty low budget, but the choreography more than made up for it. In the program it's written that they researched aboriginal story telling methods, and the show definitely gives that feel. It's beautiful to watch, some of the dancing is mindblowing. Because it's such a small theatre, you really feel the energy. It was a fantastic performance!

Posted: 4/4/04 at 1:13amtry for side or center orchestra, or dress circle smack middle for goods seats at fords. The best seats are side orchestra seats 1-10 - no further to the side than that.

Posted: 4/4/04 at 10:27amI love the fact that all of the characters can be played by persons of any race which allows for much more depth as far as character interpretation can go. And all the characters work for a variety of voice styles. Whether it be opera, gospel, pop, or classic Broadway.

Center orchestra, row F. I saw it last night and was pretty impressed by the calibre of talent, especially Becca Ayers and the girl who played Yonnah (don't have the "playbill" in front of me). The only thing that disappointed me was a bit of the dialogue was pretty trite, and the dancing of the animals was a little cheesy (but got a huge response from the audience).
I am a sucker for Schwartz' power ballads though.
I love the sight lines in the theatre, but I was surrounded by children. I know the theatre has advertised it extensively as a good family show, but if your kid is 5 and can't sit for two hours, don't take them to see a show.
Great evening out. The Post did not give it the best review, but it was enjoyable.
