#1"Hedda Gabbler" Ticket Query
Posted: 12/17/08 at 12:59amFor Christmas I want to buy my two roomates tickets to see "Hedda Gabbler." However, I'd like to be there as well, so is there anyway to buy three tickets to the show through Hiptix? Or are there any other options? I would assume the show is going to sell pretty well given the pedigree of the production and the cast, so I don't want to wait until day of sort of thing. Also, is the box office of the American Airlines currently selling tickets for Hedda Gabbler?

You're only supposed to get 1 ticket per Hiptix account, but the box office people are usually okay with giving you two. Three is really pushing it, and I wouldn't count on getting them.
A lot of the previews don't look like they're selling very well though. The theatre offers a student and a general rush on the day of a performance, and if you go early enough in previews then you should be fine getting in.

Posted: 12/17/08 at 2:42amOkay, well that's good to know. It seems like Pal Joey is selling pretty well despite terrible word-of-mouth, so I wasn't sure given the subscription base. Well, maybe I'll just treat them to some student rush tickets, ha. Not as exciting, but whatever.

HIPTIX now offers two tickets per account. That is their permanent policy now.
I saw SUNDAY IN THE PARK alone at two different performances with HIPTIX.
Roundabout shows RARELY sell out. You don't have anything to worry about in terms of getting seats.
If you don't mind spending a bit extra, buy a HIPTIX Gold membership. This is my second year having one. You make a $75 tax deductible donation to Roundabout, and you get two side Orchestra or Front Mezzanine seats for $21.50 each to every Roundabout show. You also get a free cast recording from any Roundabout musical when you sign up.
Otherwise, regular HIPTIX seats are located in the Rear Mezzanine.

Posted: 12/17/08 at 1:47pmThis isn't the board to bring this up, but I hope the Roundabout's logo for HG is not an indicator of where they're going. TOTALLY wrong -- Ibsen made a point of describing Hedda's seeming ordinariness in his description of her upon her first entrance. One of the many fascinations of the play is Ibsen's exposure of Hedda's cowardice. (In discussing the play, George Bernard Shaw noted that Hedda's ultimate tragedy was not that she died, but that ever lived in the first place.) The logo makes her look like some kind of a 1920s vamp ready to strike. And what is that debris falling all over her -- money? snow? confetti? Well, it's Roundabout, what do you expect. My opinion.

I saw the show tonight and I was bored out of my mind. I kept thinking "Maybe I just don't like Ibsen, or maybe it's just an off night, or maybe I'm just tired." But it was just awfully slow moving. My favorite part of the show was PJ Harvey's score - I liked her music going in, so I was excited to hear parts of familiar songs in it. The music made the show seem way more intense than it was. I mean, I'm not even sure what the point of the play was. I knew about the play going in, so I knew who was going to die and whatnot, but I was still just confused by the whole show. I thought the young lady playing Thea or Theba, or whatever her name is, was awful. She was my least favorite. I didn't think Parker was awful, but just one note. She had some good moments, but she didn't quite command the stage, but maybe that works for the role? I thought Ceveris was the best. I really enjoyed his overall performance.
On a side note, I thought that theater was beautiful. It seemed like every seat in the house was a good seat. And I liked the little lounge on the Fifth floor.
And another side note, the two men next to me fell asleep during Act 1, and before the show begin one asked their friend "Is this a musical" and his friend answered "No" and then he said "well how am I going to stay awake." And fast forward ten minutes and he was snoozing on my shoulder.
So what is the point of the play? What am I suppose to walk away thinking? Am I suppose to like Hedda? Was I suppose to care that she shot herself? Was the whole play just her bored and scheming just to entertain herself? I just didn't get it.

While I don't think this was as horrid as many of the reviews have stated, it is not a good interpretation or adaptation.
I felt like I was watching a character study class....not a production.

Posted: 2/22/09 at 12:58amThe show had no drive. The whole time I kept thinking "where is this going..." What was the driving force? What was it all leading-up to?

I saw it last week. I disagree that it has no drive; but I found the direction to be terribly weak. I found that all the actors did their homework and had terrific character studies....but no one made them work TOGETHER.
While I didn't think was as horrific as most; it still wasn't very good.
BTW....If the characters moved one more piece of furniture, I was gonna hurt someone!
