Does anyone know what the latest on Houdini the Musical is? Last I had heard, was this passed May that Hugh Jackman was still planning to do Houdini the musical in early 2010. I know now he's doing A Steady Rain on Broadway, but that will be done in December. A few sites say he must have decided to do this instead.. but the two wouldn't really interfere with eachother, as Houdini was planned for next year anyway. The only reason I ask, is because it was said Hugh had began learning Houdini's tricks in prep. for the role. Has anyone heard anything regarding it? because it seems possible it could happen still.. or it could one of the reasons "A Steady Rain" is such a short run. Or what do you all think? This is the most recent news I'd heard on it: https://www.broadwayworld.com/article/Variety_Reports_on_Hugh_Jackmans_Plans_for_HOUDINI_Carousel_More_20090505
I know apparantly he's doing the Barnum film, but since it was just announced it's most likely in very early stages, and unlikely to film anytime soon.

Posted: 8/4/09 at 6:54pmThe Houdini musical is by far my most anticipated of the five hundred billion Hugh Jackman musical projects that have been announced, as I think it has the possibility of being a really strong show with or without him...look at the creative team, having him in the lead is like icing. But there hasn't been any word for months on it...

That makes it almost impossible for him to be in HOUDINI if they are decided on a spring 2010 opening ( usually to catch the deadline for the season's TONY nominations), as his new movie, THE UNBOUND CAPTIVES ( with Rachel Weisz and Rob Pattinson) is an action adventure drama that will also be filmed on location ( New Mexico and New Zealand were announced as sites) so it may well take 4-5 months. That won't give him enough time to do rehearsals for HOUDINI, if he is still joining the production.
Also, Jack O'Brien, who was attached to direct is busy with the London opening of the PHANTOM sequel for a London opening in spring 2010 and a tentative fall opening on Broadway also in 2010.
David Yazbek is also involved in another musical project.
Too many ifs and buts, unfortunately

At the stagedoor of A STEADY RAIN, Hugh said that the musical is still being rewritten. That was his reply around mid-October.

How are you... just thought you'd be interested to know that HOUDINI the Musical is having it's world premiere in Melbourne, Australia in late November this year.
I am the composer of the lyrics and music.
It's worth spreading the news.
Just wanted to know, what is your interest in Houdini and where are
you from.
Cheers,

This is the third production of a "new" Houdini musical I've heard of. What's the appeal of Harry Houdini singing? Ha.
But, I wish your production the best of luck! It should be great if it has Hugh Jackman in it.

There is a wonderful production of Houdini that has been written by William Scott Duffield. His music is sublime, filled with passion, emotion and love. It debuted in 1997 at the Goodspeed Opera House in Connecticut. The play is ready for production but it doesn't have the financial backing that it needs. The latest news states that Jackman will be in a Houdini play, but there is no music yet and it won't be ready till next year.
Duffield's score is ready now, and in my humble opinion, it is the only version of Houdini that should be produced. His play should be given a chance, it's time to let an unknown composer
be heard. You too will fall in love with his words and melodies.
