I love this play and would love to see a full scale revival of it on Broadway. It's never had a revival and someone like Harden would be fantastic as Dr. Livingstone, I think!
Maybe Miley Cyrus as Agnes?

LOL. I was joking about Cyrus. I actually wouldn't mind seeing Katie Holmes tackle that role.
And in a perfect world, I'd love to see Judi Dench as Mother Superior.

If we're pairing Judi Dench and Marcia Gay Harden, I'd rather see them in a production of Three Tall Women.
I'd like to see a Broadway production of "Collected Stories" with Judi Dench.
I've never really liked Agnes of God. It seems like a theater night of "too much work and not much return". But how about Amy Adams as Agnes.

I saw the original play, and I have to admit that Harden and Dench would get me back to NYC in a flash.
Dench may be too British for the part, but my initial reaction was that it didn't matter.
And I would LOVE to see them lock horns in those scenes! Geraldine Page and Elizabeth Ashley were brilliant.
As for Agnes? Amy Adams. Although she may be "nunned out" by now.
If not her, then Scarlett Johannson.
Or ... and she's really young, but it could work ... Dakota Fanning. She's fifteen now. And I think she could nail it. Having Agnes be that age would be very jarring.
As for other Mother Superiors ... Glenn Close. Estelle Parsons.
But with this play, you're going to want super-hot names. Movie actor names. I think Dench and Harden would sell lots of tickets.

I gotta tell you the idea of Judi Dench, Marcia Gay Harden & Dakota Fanning is a wet theatrical dream.
Any producers out there reading this?? You can take ALLLLLLLLLLL the credit for yourself if you want to, just GET THIS ON THE STAGE!!! :)

Having Dakota as Agnes would add a whooooole new layer to the play. And I think she would be brilliant.
How about Allison Pill? Maybe it's just because I love her so much and am DYING for her to really make a huge name for herself.

I'm not a fan of Dakota Fanning (pun unintended). But then again child actors have always bothered me, and now that she's getting older she could win me over. But I gotta go with Allison Pill. I agree it's about time for her make a name for herself. Especially with Reasons to be Pretty not working out...sad, she could have gotten a Tony nod for that one. But she seems to have her sights set on movies...

I totally second Allison Pill. She'd ROCK.
And I don't think they'd need ALL three to be 'known' entities...one big name would do it...two at the most.

Posted: 8/21/09 at 3:11pmThere are so many talented actresses who could do wonders with this play. I think Laura Linney as Dr. Livingstone would be an excellent choice. I also think Mary Louise Wilson would be a great Mother Superior, though she doesn't have the star power of other potential choices. As for Agnes, I'd prefer to see a non-star or celebrity in that role. It's a great opportunity for an unknown talent and I think the character of Agnes works best when you're not distracted by the persona of the actor playing her.

About a decade ago, Roundabout produced an incredible reading featuring Viola Davis as Dr. Livingstone, Lynn Redgrave as Mother Superior and Anne Hathaway as Agnes. Of course, Ms. Redgrave is no longer with us and Hathaway has aged out of the part, but Viola Davis could still play Martha. (It's a shame that reading never made it to a full production -- they tried)

After seeing THE LIBRARY last year, I believe Chloe Grace Moretz could handle Agnes. Round it out with Viola Davis and Ellen Burstyn.
