Posted: 4/11/06 at 11:56pmI heard the producers don't want him performing every performance as they don't want him to ruin his voice so that is probably why he was out.

Oh, funny. I heard message boards are where rumors start.
Unless there's someone here who wants to walk by the theater every night for a couple of weeks and report back, I wouldn't guess there's anyone here who will be able to give a real or useful answer to your question, biggrab.

Posted: 4/12/06 at 12:13amHe hasn't been out much or even often. He's had some scheduled days off in the past. And people do get sick - and with what he has to sing, it's completely understandble to have to miss a show to protect his chords.

With what he has to sing, it's completely understandable that he might be out more than the average lead.
However, with the number of people clamoring for Jersey Boys tix, I think they could definitely give JLY an alternate without it affecting business much. That way, people wouldn't be surprised and disappointed. Is there a reason they'd avoid doing this? Would it somehow affect the way the Tony committee viewed JLY? Hmm

infinate ..i agree with you 100%
i absolutely think that the more demanding roles on Bway right now should have set alternates for certain days so the #1 guy can rest and be healthy and so no one will be disappointed when the #2 guy is on...
craig...why aren't you answering my PM's! LOL...and YES..everyone gets sick..for cryin out loud..don't MAKE me turn this board around! LOL!!!

Ahhh, hello rumor mill! I've missed you SO much.
I'll repeat what others have said countless times in the past: The singing demands are heavy for the role of Valli. JLY's attendance record in light of that is sparkling. He keeps his voice and body in top shape to meet those demands.
Honestly, he took a Tuesday night off in mid April? Big deal. I'm betting the producers would rather him nurse a slight vocal tickle now than have it blow up in to something huge by May and Tony Awards voting season.

John hates to miss shows. I'm not sure if it's just his work ethic, or if he doesn't want to let people down (or both) but he doesn't miss a show unless he absolutely HAS to.
I'm sure Michael was great. In fact, now that I've had the pleasure of seeing JLY, I would love to see Michael in the role.

Someone asked JLY at the stage door this past Sunday how many times he's been out or how many times Michael had gone on for him...which I didnt think was the best question to ask the guy..lol. JLY replied with about 5 or 6 times. I'm not sure if that's how many times he's been out total (with Dominic Nolfi and Michael going on) or how many times Michael Longoria has gone on for him bc both questions were posed by people standing there. But I think that's a healthy attendance record considering what he sings! When I spoke with JLY I told him to enjoy his day off (aka Monday) and he said he isn't getting a day off til the Tonys are over. The Jersey Boys were set to sing at a benefit Monday night and he said they or he have press obligations, interviews, or benefits and the like almost every day they get off now. He said running for a Tony is like running for Senate...lol. It would be fair to say that taking a Tuesday night off after going without a full day off is not a crime.
And just curious, who goes on as Joe Pesce when Michael steps up to play Frankie?

I was disappointed Daniel was out on Sunday when I took my mom to see the show, but Matthew Scott was phenomenal!!!
Thanks for the "cover" info, DD!

That's really presumptuous considering the Tony nominations don't come out for a couple more weeks.

and Fosse76, if it makes you feel any better, people were wishing John well for Tony season and telling him how he should win and JLY said he wasn't going to win the Tony, if even nominated, esp if he was up against Harry Connick Jr....lol. And how there were a lot of veterans this season and he meaning himself was just the new kid in town.
and i think what he said was justified...on his last few days off...he did the dance panel, the benefit, and Ive seen mention of the Jersey Boys hosting a few things or performing at a few upcoming things recently. Their press people are putting them out there big time....so the show gets as much exposure which hopefully results in alot of Tony nominations.

My mother and sister saw the show in January- and he was out.
My mother loved the show and wanted to see him in it, so when we went back to the city in February- my mother, father, and I went to see it.
He was out again.
We asked at the box office and they said he doesn't perform all of the shows every week. It doesn't seem like thats true though- according to what is being said here...
Eh- whatever.

Posted: 4/12/06 at 1:32pmI love him. I haven't seen the show yet...I'm taking my mom for mothers day....but when I do I hope he's in it, and if he isn't I shall go on loving him...always. because he is ridiculously talented...made a classic his own...WILL win the tony, and his girlfriend is adorable

Littledancer... wow, that just strikes me as bad luck, honestly. I've seen the show twice now and have had full cast both times. John seems to be in more than he's out- and whoever at the box office implied that he has a scheduled day off is wrong.
I'm so sorry that you missed him both times.

Posted: 4/12/06 at 2:11pmWhen I saw the show, I remember thinking, "God, that has got to be taxing on the voice." Does anyone think that they'd do something like Phantom, where there is an alternate with set shows (e.g. matinees), as Andrew mentioned? Do you think you guys would like that, because I think I would.

He performs all the times he can. I'm sure that he wouldn't just take the day off for no reasons.
I'd really love to see Michael in the role. We'll see this weekend.

Posted: 4/12/06 at 8:08pmFor three weeks, he didn't perform at the Wednesday matinees. But he has started again with eight a week. This will most likely remain the same until the Tony season has ended.

Saw it this afternoon (for the first time---AMAZING!!!) and no one was out. At the stage door Daniel said he wasn't feeling great, but you sure couldn't tell by his performace. A show that truly lived up to it's hype--go figure!
I loved every second of it!
