. . . on Wednesday afternoon and my first thought was WTF? I could have spent that afternoon seeing something else. How in the hell could this show win Best Musical over "DRS", "Light in The Piazza" and "Spelling Bee"? I would have chosen ANY of them over this. I actually had a better time at "Altar Boyz". What a travesty this was. I was really reminded of a college review where drunken frat boys come out and do a little sthick. This show just had a bigger budget than something like the Harvard's Hasty Pudding review. What were the Tony voters thinking?
I've fully understood the differences that people have had over "Wicked" and "Avenue Q" and the Tony's that year because there was something for various tastes in each show to latch on to. I was personally in the "Q" camp but I would not have been troubled if "Wicked" had won, after all there have been lesser shows to have won the award in earlier years. But, having now seem "Spamalot" for myself, it has now become for me the Worst Best Musical and I am a Monty Python fan.
I really don't feel the need to go into all of the ugly details as to why I felt this way while watching the show because if I do it will just piss me off all over again.
I would have to say say that there were one or two bright spots during the afternoon like Sara Ramirez and . . . . well, hell, I really can't remember anything else.

Man, couldn't disagree more.
Just figured I wouldn't let this become a complete Spamalot roast.
I personally loved it. Saw it twice in three days actually. Once with another Monty Python fan and once with a complete virgin. (In fact, she didn't even like English humor). Both loved it.
Just a matter of opinion I guess. But I had a blast...

Funny... I liked Spamalot well enough (didn't LOVE it, but enjoyed it..) and couldn't STAND Sara Ramirez.
That show does odd things to people.

BAL!!! Ive missed you!!!!
As for Sara, I liked her quite a bit in the show. I liked Spamalot more than I thought I would (even being a python fan I had my doubts) but Sara made the show worth it for me.
Im gonna have to call in a favor and see it again before she leaves.

Im going in 2 weeks (December 6th). I'll be sure to post a review.
Im quite interested to see it.
pab: My only qualm about not going is that the jokes in it are strictly for Monty Python fans. Is this true? And, did you find it funny? Did you laugh a lot?

I'm obviously not pab, but I can say I'm not a Monty Python fan at all, and I loved the show. I don't know that being a MP fan is necessarily an advantage, as certainly liberties are taken with the source material. At any rate, I hope you have fun!

I just saw it this past Tuesday evening. I would easily agree that it's definitely not the best musical ever. I could even be persuaded that other musicals should have won the top prize last year with probably relatively little effort. However, I also think that the show made for one of the most continuously entertaining and enjoyabe events I've seen in a long time.
And Sara Ramirez is in a league of her own and owns that Tony.

Really,
You mean the show I never got to see is so so?
I guess I will miss it. I love Monty Python and I want to see it but I will not stand three hours to get standingroom and stand another two hours.
Maybe in two years I will see it.

Posted: 11/20/05 at 6:22pmI agree Pab. I thought it was complete crap. Even when I enjoyed myself I thought: "THis is on Broadway?". It just seemed to be a cheap attempt at getting straight men into the theatre. THe performers were great, the spectacle was fine, but the material was the thinnest. That it was even nominated for Best Book is a travesty.

Posted: 11/20/05 at 6:24pmI'm with Bal; I enjoyed Spamalot, and really didn't think I would. I don't get Sara's appeal AT ALL. Yeah, she can sing, but... so what?

No, I did not laugh a lot. I was mildly amused once or twice but I sat there thinking how much funnier "Spelling Bee" and "DRS" were when I saw them and I could not for the life of me figure out how this could be considered in the same league with them and I would not even talk about it being in the same league with "The Light In The Piazza". Sure I can see how some people might enjoy this show but on Broadway? For a hundred bucks? Spoken of in the same breath as the other shows mentioned? I'm sorry, I just don't get it.
