I finished Cy Feuer's book on my flight to Europe. It's very enjoyable: filled with insight, intelligence and wonderful Jewish humor. Interesting enough, when he was producing CAN- CAN, no one other than TGC was his first choice for the role of Mme. Pistache, but she was already set to star in the London version of GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES. The role ultimately went to a French singer named Lilo, who proved to overact in an effort to get Americans to love her. Imagine how wonderful it would have been to hear TGC sing "I Love Paris"!!!!
No, there are no comments about ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY.
Dollypop, a friend of mine remembers CAN-CAN and Lilo well. There was HUGE publicity for her being the next BIG glamorous international star. Then the show opened, and it might have been the return of Anna Sten.
Ms. Channing would have been a delicious Pistasche!
