I'm going into the city for a weekend during spring break and have a choice for one other show (we already have Mama Mia tickets). Which show (In the Heights or Xanadu) do you reccomend? Are they difficult to get tickets for? I have 2 weeks.

I saw both, and enjoyed IN THE HEIGHTS much more. XANADU was a fun show, but it won't blow your socks off like IN THE HEIGHTS. Also, IN THE HEIGHTS gives you more for your money than Xanadu does.

Thank you! I told all of my girlfriends In the Heights, but they were undicided.
ITH is a must see. I saw it last Saturday, blew me away. It's simply fantastic.
It's kind of a toss up, as I adore both, but I would have to go with In The Heights, it's a bit meatier than Xanadu, and after seeing Mamma Mia!, it should make for a well rounded and rousing day of theater. Enjoy!
Two of my favorites... I'd say IN THE HEIGHTS.
So far it's unanimously ITH!
Yeah... I'm another who has seen them both, love them both, but must say IN THE HEIGHTS!
I had the same decision to make. It was a Friday night and there were tickets available to both, and I decided to go with ITH. But I had not deposited my pay check yet, so I did that first thing Saturday morning, and then came right back to get the tickets. Sadly though when I went to buy the tickets to ITH there were none left. So I got tickets to Xanadu, and let me tell you, I was not the least bit disappointed. So either way I don't think you will be disappointed.

Okay guys...
I called my friends and told them to do In the Heights and that most of the reviews on the thread said to go see it. So we're going to see that, and if we can squeeze in another show, we'll try and get Xanadu.
Thanks so much for your advice!
Yay! You're gonna love it!
totally, totally, totally different shows!!
If you're in the mood for a really well done, fun, new, authentic experiance that is full of talent and heart then in the heights.
If you want something a little shorter, that is just absolutely ridiculous and doesn't have much substance but is hilarious (that is if that's even your sense of humor) then xanadu.
Ugh, no way. Definitely Xanadu.
In the Heights is so pedestrian, except for the fact that it's introducing hip-hop to Broadway. Xanadu is hilarious.
what does that even mean..? like it likes to walk instead of take the subway?
I think so. Or maybe it has its roots in the greek word pedestrianos. Which when translated means "A very over-used phrase or word."
like it likes to walk instead of take the subway?
You're kidding me.
ETA: Good.
...i was kidding, i know what it means, i just completely dissagree. But to each their own.
It's just the smart-ass, defensive reaction that so many "fans" on here automatically fire off the minute someone expresses anything about their show remotely resembling criticism.
Sure, it's a fun show. Sure, it is introducing a new style of music to the Broadway canon. Sure, it is bringing a whole new audience to Broadway. Aside from that, I just didn't find the show particularly memorable, life-altering, or revolutionary. It has heart, but I've heard people actually suggesting that this show should have won the Pullitzer, which in my opinion is just silly.

FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!
TheActr97J, I think that's a very generalized view of the show's fanbase. Not all of us are crazy, or overemotional, or completely deluded. I respect your opinion, especially since it's not expressed in a detrimental way, as much as I disagree. I think that introducing not just hip-hop, but the sounds and music of the Afro-Caribbean stylings and influences (and very accurately so), to the musical theatre tradition is in itself ground-breaking. Add to that the way this show is the first to present a positive, and in many ways completely authentic, portrayal of latinos on Broadway (and it's the first to do so from the point of view of someone from that background), an argument can certainly be made that it's revolutionary. It's not just a "fun" show. To some of us, it's a very important step forward in the construction of latino identity in the US. That may not mean much to some, but it's vital to those of us who are latino, and are subjected to prejudice and misconceptions about our cultures on a daily basis. I'm not suggesting it's worthy of a Pulitzer (nor have I ever said so), but I don't think the show's merits can be so easily dismissed. As someone in a tv show I love once said, I'll take *any* step forward.
