I have three friends who saw it in California and were blown away. Two are very hard to please, and neither is a big Green Day fan, although one became one after seeing the show. AI would be a good choice.
I also saw Memphis and enjoyed it a lot. Lots of flaws in the book i think but great performances too.

Well, I'm enjoying your avatar!
To the OP....since no one has seen it since it left CA, it's hard to give you any input. They only started rehearsals up again 2 weeks ago...so no one is likely to have much info. It's also really hard to make those kind of decisions for another person.
I am not a Green Day fan, but find myself terribly intrigued by the concept. I really like the creative team behind it and am fans of several of the actors. However, I am wary about it.
WHEN will you be in the city? MW isn't getting great reviews and their advance sales don't seem to be great...so it might not be around long. I've heard mixed things about Memphis: ranging from great to "close it down". Can you afford to "wait" to hear about reviews to get a better sense about how it's being rec'd?

I won't be seeing this, but I freely confess that I'm not their target audience:
A) I don't find narratives about teen angst interesting, and
B) I don't think extra loud "rock" music is as interesting/effective theatrically as theatre music.
But that's just me; I'm glad that others find joy in things like this and Spring Awakening.

Posted: 3/4/10 at 11:26amIt certainly is energetic, but it reminds me of Spring Awakening, and not just because of the lead. For me the entire production reminded me of a prolonged Totally F*****. Issues such as drug use and pregnancy made me disconnect, only because I don't care anymore. It made me feel old! Honestly, I missed a lot, it was tough for me to make out much of the lyrics. I liked the music somewhat, didn't love it, but found myself tapping to the beat several times. I loved HAIR, enjoyed Rent, merely sat through Spring Awakening but felt that at these ticket prices, I wanted more than jerky choreography and two flying needlessly through the air.
