I just read on IMDB.com that there was a version of "The Wizard of Oz" in 1910 where the Wicked Witch's name was Momba.

"Elphaba' was created by Gregory Maguire for his novel (from the original author's initials L.F.B.)
Black Mamba. Now I wanna watch Kill Bill
Wow. That plot is VERY strange. I think I read it five times, and I still don't get it.

'MombI' is a character in "The Land of Oz".. the second Baum 'Oz' book.. that character name is a derivative of that
Does anyone know if they sell the complete Oz collection written by Baum in stores. I know after the original Wizard of Oz there were a bunch of sequals or additional stories.
there was in fact a number of additional stories, i think they're extremely hard to find though, i remember my public library had just two, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," and "The Land of Oz"

you can find the original Baum books in stores or in online shops.... there are 13-14 in total.
But in all, there are over 50 'Oz' books written by Ruth Plumley Thompson and thier successors
Some of the larger book store chains will have them. There was a centennial printing of all of Baum's books, approved by his estate a year or so ago.

The Oz sequels are around, I've seen them in my local library, but never in stores. None of them ever say what the Witch's name is, so Elphaba is as correct as anything else.
Did anyone see "Return to Oz" with Fairuza Balk? Wasn't there also a Princess Mombi in that movie? She was the one who could interchange her head with one of the other heads in her scary "head room". I remember seeing that movie when I was younger and thinking that those scenes were really freaky!

In Return to Oz, they used the name Mombi (from the Land of Oz -- the second book), though the character itself, with the interchangeable heads, was based on another Baum Oz character from Ozma of Oz

There's 15 Oz books, written from 1900 to 1920. I don't think I've read any more than the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, just to be old school. Yes, with all the new Oz books, the original IS old school now.

The Plumley sequels are pretty appalling, actually. Read #16 and 17, and you'll think, Okay, enough is enough (is enough is enough). Plumley churned them out because of the publisher demanding them, and, the later you get in the series, the more obvious it becomes. Even she finally gave up around #50.
But then, Baum's books aren't much better. He does fine until about halfway into the series, then he starts grabbing for anything he can to turn into a plot point.
If you want to get technical, her full name is Elphaba Thropp.

I know Gregory Maguire made up Elphaba, but I just found it interesting that someone else named her already.
