I have heard pro and con. I think a lot of the numbers we here are accounting games the backers play with the tax laws (ie, depreciation of assets which help your true bottom line but don't necessarily show up in public numbers).
Another factor we never see are royalties and profits from sale of merchandise, music, other productions, etc.
I think J and H was likely quite a money maker (and is still making some abroad) when one looks at the overall picture. I doubt it lost money for 4 years.
